How many LBs make the 53?

I think Covington makes the roster, Gifford is IR and Phillips makes the roster if they don't go with another position for ST purposes.

Covington will be the 6th LB if he is not injured. If he is injured, I think another team's cut will be added to the Cowboys.
Gifford probably makes it to the PS. Gifford's flash is not enough to make the team so far.
Cowboys might add a LB via trade of a to-be-cut DL or DB.

I also think the bottom 3 LBs (Thomas, Phillips, Covington) will be fluid throughout the year. If someone becomes available from another team, I could see the Cowboys cutting one and adding another player.

I'm guessing 6:

1) Jaylon
2) LVE
3) Lee
4) Joe Thomas
5) Justin Phillips
6) Luke Gifford

This leaves out Christian Covington and Justin March.

Still haven't seen much from him, so I'm betting he can make it to the Practice Squad.

March is most likely gone, but he has been a contributor on special teams.
I agree 6. However, they need to let Joe Thomas play more to "save" Lee for later in the season when his annual injury shows up. 60/40 or even 70/30 if we can get away with it.

looking at recent roster history, it appears the Cowboys always keep at least seven LBs on the 53 roster.
and it makes even more sense to keep as many with sean lee's durability history. He's the type that end up playing only 3 or 4 games for entire year.
you have to have always keep a Plan strategy with him.

1 LVE
2 Jaylon
3 Lee
4 Thomas
5 Griffin
6 Gifford (should club choose keep on 53 over IR)
7 March or Covington (march the better special teams player)

and if i'm another NFL team and see his name floating out there after seeing his niners game and scouting out his camp reports, i'm grabbing Gifford off the waiver wire before he has a chance to
be re-claimed by the Cowboys.
i'd much rather IR'ed Luke than risk losing him from exposing him to the waiver wire.

Does Gifford get a full salary for being placed on IR? If not, then Gifford might not accept IR and take an injury settlement from the Cowboys and try to sign somewhere else for a full salary a little while later. If he does get a full salary on IR, then putting him on IR makes sense.

He couldn't put any weight on his foot after the 49er injury. So, maybe his injury is pretty bad and he needs to go on IR. Haven't heard anything about him in a walking boot or anything. Looks like the Cowboys are giving out little information and have some plan in place to retain his services.

i believe Gifford was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain injury, I dunno what the level and severity degree of it, but of course right after a game where he actually suffered the injury, he’s not going to be able to place any weight on it.

And historically those type injuries (high ankle sprain) never heal up during the season, its lengthy and they tend to linger and limit players to what they can do. But again it depends upon the degree and severity of Gifford’s.

A I would assume that accepting an Injured reserve player placement on the team is up to the player, he could easily arrange an injury settlement, but if he’s injured as he is thought to be, what’s the likelihood that he’s going to play right away for the next NFL team in sight ?

If Luke still would like to have the best chance to play with the Cowboys, as to how they prefer to arrange it, that’s up to him.
If he doesn’t want to carry the IR tag, should the team prefer to pursue him as such, then he has to right to injury settle and be on his way.

I'm seeing Seven LBs:

1 LVE
2 Jaylon
3 lee
4 thomas
5 phillipps
6 gifford
7 march
