Sacks is kind of a funny record really.. there were quite a few guys who were pre-80s who had 20 or more, but since they didn't record sacks on the books, it's not really official.

I think Deacon Jones supposedly had like 26 in '67 or '68, but it's not official.

Very true, there is no stat on how many sacks many greats had prior to the NFL keeping the stat. I would not be surprised if others like Deacon Jones had more than 22.5.

Of course, then you have to throw in the fact that it was a different era as well....

Many of the old greats (including the semi recent 80s ones like crazy Joe Klecko) were notorious for gouging offensive linesman eyes, horsecollar tackles, grabbing the QB by the head and throwing him 10 yards...

The Sack-Masters used to pretty much have free reign to physically punish anyone who got in their way.

Deacon was the king of the head slap as well. Legal then but can't get away with that today.

Yeah, I was watching some old highlights of him on NFLN the other day... he was notoriously nasty when he came after you. I remember they said he gave some OL who got in his way a concussion with his infamous head slap.

Heck when I was a kid 1st playing football the coaches on our team taught the head slap. Deacon however was the king of it and it was very effective

The record is 22 as far as I'm concerned... Strahan was handed the record by Favre, and he took it like the douchebag he is/was.

Guy even had the nerve to celebrate right after the "sack" as if he broke the record legit.

Yeah, our LB coach used to tell us...

"It's not what you can do on the field... it's what you can get away with"

True, being taught techniques to get away with holding or some other penalty is taught. They look at it like speeding it is only a violation if you get caught. :laugh2:

LOL, yeah no joke.

My other favorite of Coach P was:

"If you get penalized for being a dumby, you better have knocked some guy on his a** to make up for it."

And if we didn't..... whistle drills :)

18.5

If Spencer starts opposite(Which I'm banking on) the number is acheiveable. Ellis doesn't strike fear into opposing coaches. A young stud like Spencer, with solid speed will.

Spencer making plays may do that and hopefully he will be able to do more this year. His speed is not going to strike fear in anyone if you are not making plays. As for Ellis I hope he can continue performing as he did last year I don't care if he strikes fear he made plays. Right now I want performance for whoever is on the field be in Ellis or Spencer or when both are in the game as the same time.

Well I believe the NFL single season sack record is 22.5 lets say 23 sacks on the season and a new record!!!!

Too bad Favre isn't around for a freebie anymore.

I'm hoping that Erik Walden kid can make a minimal impact at least, maybe a sack during the season. If anything, we need our defensive ends to create pressure, something they seem inept at, for Ware to have a big year.

Oh, get over it. I am so sick of the idea that Favre for some reason gave him the record. Favre is one of the great competitors all time in the NFL and I will just never believe that he would just give Strahan the record out of the goodness of his heart!

I want to see them all do well including Ellis who is coming off his best season as a pro. I like the fact that we have legit options to rotate in and out of the defensive front
