How much cap space does Dallas have?

Just last week after Dallas tweaked Zeke's contract, they had over $12 million in cap space according to overthecap.com. Now the updated cap space says only $228,000. I understand about cuts and practice squad($2,000,000). But how does it shrink almost $12 mil? Can somebody help me out? :flagwave:

I have no idea. I guess cuz we signed some players to the PS? THough, idk if that impacts the cap. I honestly don't know.

It said the 16 practice squad players salary totaled $2.7 million. What about the rest? ‍♂️

I have absolutely no idea.

Active contracts on roster* approximate
184.2mil

Dead Money:
12.1mil

IR:
7.9mil.

Reserve:
3.9mil

Pup:
1.3mil

Total cap hit:
~209mil

Once guys go off the IR and back onto the roster, they will kick off the fringe guys on the active roster reducing our total cap hit and freeing up cap space.

@xwalker is right, had a brainfart on 51 vs 53 for cap hit towards the cap ceiling in the regular season

Ok thanks, makes sense.

  • During the off-season:
    • Only the top 51 contracts with regards to cap hit count against the cap.
    • Dead Money from players released prior to the cut to 53 including dead-money carried over from previous seasons.
  • Once the regular season starts:
    • All 53 players on the active roster.
    • All practice squad players.
    • All players on PUP or IR.
    • Dead Money from players released during the cut to 53.
    • Dead Money from players released prior to the cut to 53 including dead-money carrier over from previous seasons.

@CowboyJ70

IR: 7.9mil.

That adds up to 13.1M.

That's approximately the amount that the OP is asking about.

For many years there were probably as many or more threads about the salary cap as about football topics.

It is interesting how few threads/posts now are about the cap.

I will offer two explanations for this:

Not withstanding a few contracts, the Cowboys have generally managed the cap space fairly well the past few years.

Many on this forum are simply better educated with regard to cap space and its implications.
