How Much Did We Improve on Defense?

I got to give them credit this year they definitely made an effort to improve the defense.
I believe we have thrown some pretty good talent at that side of the ball this off season.

Now it will be very interesting to see how long it will take for our new defensive coordinator to get this talent on the same page and playing to its potential.

When this potential is realized I don't think there is any reason why we can't be a middle of the pack defense at least.

If Overshown comes back close to where he was, we'll have tone-setters on dline, LB and secondary with Williams, Overshown and Downs.

You need that. Bland will never be the pick 6 guy he once was without Parsons. But he can still be decent. Revel has potential too if he can overcome his injury.

But there's a lot of questions as far as injuries and we don't have the best training staff.

Whatever happens, I like Parkers ability to shape the defense to the players' talent.

But, yeah, potentially.....

Compared to last year, how much did we improve?

If we have Christian Parker last year, we win at least two more games. Just on coaching alone.

We also got Gary, Lawrence, Ezeiruaku more experienced, Quinnen, Kenny Clark, Caleb Downs? Who even does that? We also got Overton, Barham, Jalen Thompson, Dee Winters, Overshown is coming back, we picked up Cobie Durant. And we have guys like Bell and Reddy.

Pinch me. I was ready to give up last year. This is looking like a new team.

And that's a good thing.

Maybe it's not yet complete, but that is indeed one heck of a rebuild.

Anyone sense one more trade coming before the season starts?

I do.

I give the off-season rebuild a solid A.
I don't know why it wouldn't be a solid A. We drafted several players any other draft would be separately my pet cat. Like Barham,Overton. With all the wholesale changes we should give em half a season to gel.

To me the jury is still out. If CB can just stay healthy it could be a lot. If bland and revel plsy up to potential it could be a huge leap

Well, we'll have to wait until the 3rd or 4th games, won't we?
You must have given this long thought to bring this to us.
On the other hand, we could jump into the DeLorean and visit autumn 2026.
Yes, that might do.

Still not adding thing substantive, I see.

We won't know until the season gets started. A great deal has been done, starting with hiring CP as our DC. New players and a new scheme, how it all comes together is a huge unknown at this point. I choose to think it wasn't all in vain. But who knows?

Slow down. They have to prove it first.

Let's break it down from the back-end:

FS/S - Large improvements with Locke and Thompson now available doesn't force us to rely on Hooker and we should have an All-Pro in Caleb Downs if all pans out or at very minimum pro-bowl caliber play

CB - Diggs/Revel were relied on/needed to early into the season. This led to Carson and others getting more reps - with Revel another year under his belt and the addition of Durant I'll consider it a slight upgrade. We were at a D- last year and now have gone to C+ with potential to go higher depending on Blands injury.

MLB - Don't need to say much, this was an F. Overshown was lacklustre. Dee Winters & Barham should take this to a C+.

Front 7 - Huge improvement...Q and Clark without Osa will benefit the run game. Gary replaces Clowney and we have EzE and now a 1st round edge.

Defense went from D- to C+ with potential to be a B-/B tier defence.
Defense wasn't a D-, it wa an F-

Defense wasn't a D-, it wa an F-
you truly could not get a worse grade

Now anyone expecting anything huge now is a homer

We have no idea how good Parker is as a DC and pretty much everything hangs on that
I do believe we have substantially improved talent
but then our talent was SO HORRIBLE that we might not see that much of a difference in the stats. At least early on.

fact is when you are at one and go to two that is a 100% improvement. But its still only two.

I feel pretty confident that the defense we are putting into service will improve steadily over time. It can't likely be granted without some early adjustments being made, before consistency occurs. There are a considerable number of changes that will be required to become a steady and highly reliable force to contend with. I'm hoping that by the midpoint of the upcoming season, significant improvements may become an accepted reality. Let's be especially patient in the meantime. It's surely worth waiting for. The degree of talent that was added should make a world of difference. It's just a matter of time.

The injuries certainly do leave some big question marks but these guys have had some time now to recover and we could see some things that really surprise us.
I do believe that Parker can relate to these players better and get the most out of them.

If we are lucky enough to stay healthy on defense and a couple of these previously injured players break out this defense could be a force to be reckoned with.

What's the point of "giving him a break". At this point he's a flash in the pan and we haven't seen it yet since Mazi Smith fell on his leg.

This board acts like Overshown is a former All-Pro. He was here all last year, didn't even pop off the screen. I wouldn't count on him and he's fighting for his role in camp to be the starter at MLB.
Thanks for the memories Mazi.

Is it fair to say we can see something as soon as game one?? I'm thinking more around game 4 or more, anything that looks good is an improvement

Love the additions that they made they're not all flashy but they were made with a plan and a purpose
Well said Coogs... On paper, it looks like a complete U-Turn for the better compared to last year however we won't actually know until game one (or as Coogs said possibly even game 4 or 5). What's on paper, I really like...

obviously, when you are the 6th worst all time defense, there is nowhere to go but up. but you don't go from that to top 10 in one off season no matter what you have done (unless you signed 6 all pros and drafted in the top 10 twice).

there are some question marks and some anxiety around a few things.
CP has the makings of being a great defensive coach, but he has never been a defensive coordinator, so there is a learning curve playing chess against some of the OC guru's in the league. he bring a fresh mindset, aggressive and new defense and its just him learning. unlike when we made Moore an OC after one year of coaching in NFL, I think his learning curve is much shorter because he has been in the league for a while and was a key part of one of the best NFL defenses when Philly won the superbowl. I think he alone will improve the defense.

The safety room is definitely improved. no denying that. more atheltic and better younger players. I am concerned about CB room. still some question marks remain. yes, signing durant fills the gap we had with Lewis, but will Revel be able to step up in year 2. he underwhelmed in first year, but perhaps due to his injury and recovery. same with bland. is he going to fizzle and be an average CB, now that he got his big contract. I think they will be somewhat helped with the new scheme, and better safeties and better DL play (further down).

The DL is definitely improved. they did a decent job last year being thrown together, but the LBing and Safeties were so bad behind them, all their work for not. I expect to see a lot more from this group this year, specially with improved play of LBs and Safeties. we will miss Osa, people may deny that. but we have a good rotation of players, and I expect the team to keep 7 DL and rotate frequently. we can show different fronts with the DL versatility. I expect Q to step up a lot this year.

LBing is improved. I mean, they sucked so bad last year, there is nowhere but up, and I think they maybe still yet the weakest group on defense with the biggest question marks. with the 3-4 change, couple of players get thrown in there as LBs, like Eze and Gary, so that may ease some of the concerns, but I look at those guys as DEs and the question is how is our pass rush going to be. but is Dee Winters better than Murray? heck yes. I hope so. is he earth mover and probowler? I don't think so, but just being in the right place at the right time most of the time will be great to see. Overshown is a question mark. he didn't do much last year and has been injured every year in the league. this is his final chance, so staying healthy is key for him. with those guys we do have some versatility and side line to sideline coverage. Braham is a rookie, so I think he maybe OK, playing in spots, learning, but I also don't expect him to be rookie of the year.

with all of that said, there is a lot of changes that have to come together. I expect them to start slow, better than last year but slow. new play book. new scheme. new players thrown together, it will take time. they will make mistakes. miss assignments. be in wrong place. etc. so first 4 games, just their athleticism and new scheme will help but they probably won't be the dominant defense we want to see.
I expect the defense to improve over the course of the year, make more splash plays, as opposed to more mistakes. and if 3/4 of the changes made work out (that's pretty high expectations, but somewhat realistic) then this should easily be a top 15 defense.

our problems is that our D consists of way too many IFs
IF Parker is a really top level DC
IF Downs is what we hope he is
IF OVershown comes back and plays the season at the level we hope he can
IF our other draft picks contribute
and IF Gary is a good contributor as well as the other vets we brought in

If we have Christian Parker last year, we win at least two more games. Just on coaching alone.
So Zeus comes down to Frisco from Mount Olympus and we would have only eeked out two more measly wins?
