How much of an impact can a rookie CB have?

If we draft well, how much of an impact can a rookie CB realistically have?

For example, I think A Ross, the rookie CB for the Giants, was playing pretty well in the playoffs. (He was playing well enough to start at least, though the Giants secondary isn't particularly stellar either.)

Also, Ross wasn't a top 10 choice.

Do you think a player like Cason, for example, in this year's draft is as talented (or more talented) than Cason?

I'm assuming we are not going to land Cromartie or McKelvin or Jenkins (because they will likely be gone by 22). Though we may have a shot at Talib and/or Cason.

Where would you rank Ross coming out of the draft last year to Cason and Talib this year?

A rookie cb can have a big impact even if the Pacman deal goes through. We can't depend on Henry to be healthy the whole season not to mention Pacman might not be reinstated.

Depends on the circumstances. If he has a chance to get into the NFL groove before getting thrown to the wolves, by midseason he might be pretty good. Hopefully Henry can avoid his annual injury until midseason.

As for Pacman, I'm not counting on him because the Titans are being such @#%#$ about it lately.

How would you compare Ross of the Giants to Cason and Talib coming out of college?

I don't watch enough college football to compare them.

It depends...we dont need one to start, so the odds are good that virtually any CB we pick between rounds one and three will be an improvement over Reeves/ N Jones from last yr

but picks in the 20's are extremely iffy...even picks in the teens arnt guaranteed to make impacts (see Carpenter recently for us)

trading for Adam Jones if he stays out of trouble definitely improves the defense far more than any rookie DB would, because there's a reasonable chance he might even beat out Henry, who'd then become our nickel DB

How would you compare Ross to Cason/Taliq/Flowers, for example.

I know you watch a lot of college football. :)

According to the Discovery channel if he's hurled from the upper atmosphere at 30,000 miles per hour he will leave an impact crater about 1/2 mile wide.

Ross definitely has more physical talent than those two, especially in terms of pure speed and foot quickness

Cason is more polished in technique than the other two...I didnt see enough of Talib to have a definite opinion on him...the few games I saw him play he made some plays but also gave up some easy ones

We've had pretty good luck in the past with rookie CBs. Everson Walls and Larry Brown did pretty well as rookies.

The original question is somewhat irrelevant (but I do get what yer saying).....but, we need a CB and we need one badly. Draft one (at least one), and let the chips fall where they may.

We have holes to fill, let's get fillin'em.

Then, may the best player start.

carry on....

A rookie CB doesn't have to come in here and start. Especially if PM is signed and is cleared to play.

A rookie CB (and potentially 2 rookie corners) need to provide more support than what Nate Jones and Reeves did.

I don't think that's going to be a problem. Reeves was adequate at best, his lack of mental skills for the position overshadowed his ability to use his speed. I would have to think any corner selected in the first day is going to have more upside than what Reeves brought to the table.

Quite frankly this isn't a defense that puts it's corners on an island. Their most needed skills are route recognition and tackling ability.

TNew had a big impact his first year in Dallas.

Kevin Smith also played well his rookie year and was one of the missing pieces for our first SB team of the 90s.

I would hope that if we used a 1st rounder on a CB that he would be starting ahead of Henry by the end of the year.

Whoever we get should be at least as good as Ross, IMO. And if we were to get a guy like DRC at 22, he would have the potential to be much better than Ross.
