How Necessary Is Preseason Football For Starters?

We all know it will never go away obviously as every sport has a preseason. And of course they make money off of it. I know it will never go away so that is not my angle.

My question is do starters really get any benefit? They are playing against the most vanilla defenses you can have. Same as the offense. They are running basic protection schemes and most of their playbook is not even in play.

It sucks seeing starters year after year go down in preseason. Edelman is done for the year. Hitchens looks to be hurt pretty good. 2 guys their teams count on.

I see it as benefiting the rookies and guys fighting for a roster spot. I already know what Sean Lee can do. No need to really have him out there in these types of games. These players are getting their reps in training camp and practice. They should be fine with that.

Unless you want to start out flat in week 1, some pre-season is needed. Four/five games is a bit much but the vets do need to get live reps in.

reps, conditioning, Muscle memory, confidence....Not as much as the rooks, but the rust needs to get knocked off. I would be ok if there were no more such rubbish. As long as everyone starts the season the same i'm good. leave it up to team practice and evaluators to get the best on the field and roll with it. This sport is too violent to play 4 or 5 extra games. Even the young bones hurt..Hurts me just watching.

Garrett is our coach. We start out flat in week one whether we have 4 pre season games, or 10.
