How Scott Linehan has created one of the NFL’s most lethal offenses in Dallas

Scott Linehan has always described his offensive philosophy with the word “attack”. It goes back to his introductory press conference for the Rams when he credited his Idaho coach, Dennis Erickson, with the influence of “attacking” opponents. The Cowboys have certainly been an offense that has plenty of firepower and they most definitely attack opposing defenses.

With a punishing running attack, the Cowboys can control the clock and break the will of a defense. One area where the Cowboys could improve from last season is their passing offense, where they ranked 23rd in yards per game.

I hope see continual improvement but I also hope the offense remains balanced in it's attack. Seahawks won a championship with a worse ranking than 23rd in passing yards

Very true and they did so with a potent defense that we're doing all in our power to emulate these days.

I'm hoping we're somehow able to approach their level of effectiveness, once our defense gets it going.

I dont think we can really compare defenses talent wise. They have 3 main guys on that defense that would walk in and start on our defense immediately, actually, they would walk on anywhere in the league and start.

I agree however just from the offensive perspective I have to say I like being able to dominate on the ground, I think it keeps the defense off balance, I think the pounding they take shows up late in the game as our OL wears on them and I think it makes our passing game even more effective.

Oh I agree 100 percent. The game against Seattle in 2014 is the perfect example. Murray ground them down to nothing. By the time the 4th quarter was there, the defense couldn't stop me running the ball.

The nice thing for the Cowboys this year is the offense is in good shape across the line in regards to starters.
Bringing in Switzer is another good draft choice.
Maybe next year we see the Cowboys look to get a top flight draft choice on a TE.

This past seasons offensive success gave the Cowboys the freedom to draft on the defensive side of the ball to get more speed and playmakers in the secondary.
That will pay dividends down the road.

Sounds a little like the Jimmy Johnson way of building the Cowboys when he hit town.

I also think both coordinator's will stay around because they have flexibility within the system to do what they think is best - where the head coach is not trying to drive on particular area.

That's debatable to an extent....mt issue with either Scott or Jason is that they sometimes change the gameplan from what was working well in the first half to something that isn't working at all in the second half and stick with it.

And for some reason Cowboys can't seem to replicate that dominance in postseason, time when champions are made.

Agree, except Jimmy was able to rebuild both offense and defense at the same time and in a much shorter period. Jimmy was so much more aggressive/proactive in finding and developing personnel, in every phase of the game.

Jimmy also did not deal with FA, salary caps and had a sweetheart deal in the Walker trade. Not only getting our own 1st, 2nd rd picks but getting Minn for a couple of years.

It's what happens when you're good enough to play solid pass defense against regular QBs, but not good enough to do the same against elite ones. You end up relying on your own elite offense to get it done, and that can get you burnt. One pick on a screen pass or one overturned call or weird penalty and it can all end suddenly.

Jimmy had the resources to add and retain personnel, so he did, and removed all doubt.

Jimmy would have adapted, just like he adapted when he first entered league, disrupting and eventually conquering it. The salary cap stuff was not too much for guy with Jimmy's IQ and penchant to not only understand but to dominate.

Sorry man, all coaches and teams face the same challenges, yet the Champions like Pats, Seahawks, Broncs, Ravens, Steelers, Gints even 9ers under Harbaugh always find a way to overcome.

Coaching matters most in the playoffs. And that's what separates Garrett from the coaches above, even when/if Garrett has the better talent.

He would have? When given a situation of FA, Salary cap with the Dolphins he failed.

He failed? He took Phins to playoffs every year he was there. And drafted a couple of HOFers to boot in just 3 seasons. Jimmy wasn't hamstrung by the cap or FA, he was stuck with aged legend in Marino and he was not patient enough to wait him out.

Wish Garrett would fail like that. Remind me again what Garrett accomplished in his first 3 years again?

Miami was getting just as far under Shula the 2 season prior to him leaving Miami was in the playoffs so Jimmy did not take a poor team and made them better he took an avg team and they stayed avg. As for Marino? Jimmy was HC and GM so don't give me that Bull ****. I love it you will go after Garrett and make excuses for Jimmy? LOL
