The first race in NASCAR history was held on the beaches of Daytona so it's a tradition for the 500 to be the first race of the season.joseephuss said:I don't understand a system where the biggest, grandest race of NASCAR The Daytona 500 starts the season and really does little in determining the winner at the end of the season.
The point system is not about the most wins. It's about consistency. If you run well through out the year you will be near the top of the standings. I do think they need to tweak it and make winning more important. Also they need to change up the tracks they run in the "chase" to make it more of a challenge.jimmy40 said:Jeff Burton wins his first race in five years and he's leading the points chase. That's just stupid.

Now with your explanation I wonder why they could not have one at the start and end of the season.

Team racing is ridiculous. Instead of the best driver that day winning, they work together to get a team member the win and help boost their points...
Team racing cost the sport it's most popular figure in Dale, Sr.
In true race fashion they should just put the pedal to the metal and may the best man win.
They should also take "Stock Car" out of the moniker...
Yeagermeister said:This will probably be an unpopular opinion but Dale would still around if he wasn't blocking for Jr and Michael Waltrip.
I respected his ability but I never cared for his style of driving.trickblue said:Yep... I agree totally...
It's funny, I rarely watch NASCAR, but I happened to be watching that day...

If consistency is more important than winning it's a stupid points system. Didn't Terry Labonti win one race and the championship one year while Jeff Gordon won like 10 races that year? There definetely should be a wider gap in points between winning and coming in 2-10. If Daytona is so important make it worth double points or something. I wish baseball could figure out how to have the world series to begin the year. Now that I could live with.Yeagermeister said:The point system is not about the most wins. It's about consistency. Yeah I remember that year. Gordon may have had a lot of wins but he also didn't finish a lot of races.jimmy40 said:If consistency is more important than winning it's a stupid points system.
