When I see players demanding big $'s I always worry about the % of cap that they are eating up. I really don't care how much money the Jones pay people other than if we give too much and can't add other good players. There is a great article around what winning teams tend to do. Surprising to me the top 10 contracts on a team should be 60% of the cap based on what winning teams tend to do. Not that you should do this just because but it is a rule of thumb. https://www.sbnation.com/2018/3/15/17114596/nfl-free-agency-2018-salary-cap-formula-winning-teams.

Here are our current top 10 player contracts (Name, Base $ guranteed, total cap hit)

1. Demarcus Lawrence $20,571,600, $20,571,600, 10.7%

2. Tyron Smith $10,000,000 $15,545,000, 8.1%

3. Zack Martin $10,000,000, $14,000,000, 7.3%

4. Amari Cooper $13,924,000, $13,924,000, 7.29%

5. Travis Frederick $6,000,000, $10,975,000, 5.75%

6. Tyrone Crawford $7,000,000, $10,100,000, 5.29%

7. La'el Collins $6,516,750, $9,925,084, 5.2%

8. Ezekiel Elliott $3,853,137, $7,940,653, 4.16%

9. Byron Jones $6,266,000, $6,266,000, 3.3%

10. Allen Hurns $4,000,000 , $6,250,000, 3.27%

Total 60.4% of the total $191 million cap ($115.5 million)

It's interesting who isn't in this list yet (Dak) and what that will do to our top 10 as well as DLaw's contract.
I am curious if people think we are spending our cap correctly. It also might give us insights into why the Cowboys are being cheap since they are already at the top of the number toward our top 10 players. For comparison NE was able to win a superbowl at 45% but Brady is a big reason for that.

BTW Sean Lee would have been in the top 10 with $7m and $3.5m in dead money if we released him. Now it makes more sense to me why they signed him to a $3m contract. It is less than he would have cost us but has incentives so he can earn up to his original amount. Seems like a win for both sides.

Fact: the bottom 27 players take up 10% of the cap or around 19m

That is interesting as well. I wonder how those guys feel seeing all the money going to the top 10? I don't have time to look it up but I wouldn't be surprised if that is common across the league.

DLaw and ACooper are taking up twice the amount of space they would take if their contracts were extended for Year One.... the team could save another 17m

I know that come 2020, if we don’t extend anyone, we are sitting at 67% of the cap free with 55% of the roster under contract. That’s 135ish free. Plenty of room for Dak, Zeke, Coop,Law, Jones, etc.

Way too much in fact

If they didn't sign anyone this year they won't spend big next year either

I am interested in how they still try to appear Cap poor next year

lol......He actually has 5yr/57m left on his deal and 0m of that is guaranteed

He signed the Mother of all Team Friendly deals

I remember when it happened, I thought, that seems kind of low for a ten year deal. And look at him, not demanding a trade or dying his hair because his guaranteed money ran out.

Do you know they aren't spending the entire amount each year? What is the total payroll? Remember we still have to sign our rookies as well so some has to go there.
