How to fix the Preseason

Just an idea based upon all the recent talk about making the preseason more competitive (Assuming that the regular season is not expanded):

Here you go:

For every game a team wins in the preseason, they are awarded 1 point. (Max number of Points = 4)

A team may redeem those points for corresponding draft picks at the end of each round. For example, Cowboys win all 4 preseason games and get 4 points, they make get (4) sixth round picks or (2) six round picks and (1) fifth, or (1) 2nd round pick. (Point for draft pick value structure)

To break the ties between teams, the order of the picks is selected from the corresponding draft order. Here is an example:

Mock 2010 draft

Round 1 - Teams 1-32 make their picks based upon 2009 season record

Round 2 - Teams 1-32 make their picks based upon 2009 season record

End of Round 2 - Teams are awarded preseason winning bonus picks in the order of 2009 season record.

-Meaning if the Raiders and Cowboys both won all 4 preseason games in 2009 and redeemed those points for (1) 2nd round pick, the Raiders would pick 1st over the Cowboys due to draft order.

Its just a thought/starting point...I think it would make things more competitive and interesting...what do you guys think and what are your ideas.

Pre-season is and should be about getting a team prepared for the season. Getting young guys who may not get much of a chance to show they are worth keeping and developing for the future. Winning and losing of Pre-season is not as big of a deal as getting the right 53 men on your team

I agree with this. No offense to the OP, but that is just a terrible idea

I understand your point about getting young players ready for the preseason, however fans don't want to pay full price to watch a glorified scrimmage either. Coaches have minicamps, training camps, scouting from college, combines etc... They don't need all those preseason games to evaluate players.

The nice thing about the point system is that each organization can make its own decision...if they need to work out younger players perhaps they don't try to win, other organizations may think differently and play starters longer and actually work on schemes because they value the picks more. It makes it more interesting.

I agree and I would not pay full price to see a pre-season game. I think that is what needs to be changed. I think it is more important for an NFL team to be able to get the right players on the roster than to worry about winning those games. As for mini camp and training camp that is not the same as giving these guys live action where they play at full speed.

Simply put. No. Preseason shouldn't reward anything. The way to fix preseason is to make it shorter. The way to get younger players playing time is to institute something like an 8-10 team minor leagues and actually have them play meaningful snaps. You would see younger players who are probably below special teams level being able to play and improve as opposed to likely just sliding off the bottom of the roster into oblivion.

the owners are not going to shorten the preseason unless they expand the regular season. I think expanding the regular season is a bad idea though. I think their should be some incentive for teams to compete and get rewarded for playing competitively in the preseason since fans are paying full price to watch them play. It is definitely a balance

Expand the regular season then. The preseason in every sport is watered down content and engineering ways to make it "more competitive" is stupid.

Name one sport that the preseason isn't about knocking off a little bit of rust and seeing a lot of hot scrub on scrub action. The problem is you can't because that is what preseason sports is.

I hope they don't expand the reg season, 16 games is a lot for these players as is. As a fan of course it means more football but for those playing it I think that is asking a bit much.

As a fan I absolutely hate the preseason. As a season ticket holder I hate it even more. The owners in essence sell 8 tickets at 125% cost and if you pay for it 8 parking passes at 125% cost because preseason football lasts too long and is frankly way too useless to anything but the most hard core wanna be scout.

I don't like the preseason either, but expanding the regular season would be too much on the players and lower the overall quality of the playoffs

Preseason is for preparation. My issue with it is that they charge full fare for that garbage...that is unethical, imo.

As I said I would not pay to watch a pre-season game however I do know the importance of the pre season much more for the organization than many of the players. Some cuts are easy to make others are much harder and pre season allows them to give these guys a real chance to make the ball club.
