How to fix the run defense

I wish Stephen would bring in a defensive consultant to review and monitor the absolute disaster that Marinelli and Richard have created. Before hiring the consultant, make some calls to former NFL people like Jimmy Johnson and Parcells and get their opinions of what the problems are.

has the rushmen penetration scheme become completely obsolete?
sure should get better dts.
if so, what can be done with these players?

They had all offseason to improve things.

But they - like all of their defenders here like to say - "know better" than we do.

Just like when Jihad Ward was the answer at DT last year, remember?

Just like they knew better when the Rams ran over them for 273 yards.

Just like when Taco Charlton was the "better fit" than TJ Watt.

Just like when Trysten Hill was "the answer" in the 2nd round.

Just like when they "didn't need" to pay any of the established defensive tackles like Gerald McCoy.

Just like when they thought it was "absurd" to think of a paycut or outright cut for the $10 million dollar man Tyrone Crawford.

They got this...

I'd rather use the 4-3 flex over this scheme. At least it worked at one point in the NFL

The "fat DT" is a popular meme on the Cowboys boards, but it's a fair question to ask if those guys really are too immobile to play in the glorified Big 12 we call the NFL.

The last 4 first round DTs drafted over 320 pounds are:

-Dexter Lawrence (rook, but looks good so far)
-Vita Vea (jury's out, but little return to date)
-Vernon Butler (huge bust)
-Danny Shelton (huge bust)
-Star Loteueli (JAG)

Honorable mention for Malcolm Brown, who checked in at 319 pounds at the Combine and has been little more than a role player in 5 seasons. (although he sure took it to us last week).

Every one of these threads ends up filled with fans clamoring for Snacks Harrison, and while he is a stud, I can't help but think that it's because they can't think of any other successful big DTs.

Star is a very good player, Shelton was overdrafted but did play well for NE last season. As big as he is, Butler isn't a NT.

Just because some players bust does not mean you should ignore the position.

the defense held saints to 12 points last week, and you think an outside defensive consultant is gonna be emergency- be brought in (over Garrett's head?) and per Stephen Jones ?
and why would we want ex-coach people who have been out and away from the game for centuries to immediately brought in as consultants ?
Geeez !

It all begins with the foundation of the defense and that begins with the hourglass in the middle. DT's, MLB and S's. Booger has always been more interested in the outside in approach with his war daddy DE's and CB's. If he hadn't thought he was getting a steal, Smith wouldn't be the MLB.

It might be a passing league but IND showed KC a little about the importance of that run game, just like they did to the Cowboys. Did you see the Colts OL getting to the second level and giving KC fits?

It's simple, the shortest distance is between two points, any team that cannot stop the run up the middle will get owned up the middle until they bring in that 8th man and then get owned on the perimeter in the passing game. Norv Turner made his name and career doing just that in the early 90's.

They will have to do the best they can with this as it is a design flaw but it is a recurring one, I don't see Booger thinking DT's or S's are sexy enough in the draft to go in the 1st round.

Because of the success of a few wide body's, that became the flavor of the day. There are good run stopping DT's that are not hippos and that can rush the pocket as well.

It's not the size, it's the selection. Who was the last quality inside DL the Cowboys had? Glover? Ratliff was good, not great, but he would have been better if they could have rotated him more just like Ware.

Start over. That's how you fix it. Keep a few good defensive players they have, blow up the rest.
