How to improve the pass rush

Hold everything. I missed this the other day. In the anxiousness to discuss the other two, is there some overlooked good news here? Dare we allow ourselves to think the unthinkable on this topic after all?

if you've noticed, our DEs play head up on the OT, even on passing downs. This alignment helps with our run defense, as the DE is essentially playing 2 gap. However, on passing downs, it is a liability for the pass rush for a DE because it is hard for the DE to get to the OTs outside shoulder without the OT getting his hands on him. To improve the rush, we need to implement more "wide 9" principles. This allows the DE to approach the OT from more of a 45 degree angle. And forces the OT to kick out wider. This gets the OT on a bigger island by himself and could free our DEs to rush around the edge or counter inside without running into the "trash" of the G. While there is downside of creating some rushing lanes, it's worth a shot. Just a thought.

The basis of everything we do on defense is contain. A wide 9 is the antithesis of contain. We do run a decent amount of twists and stunts. We just don't have the horses right now on defense, plain and simple.

What we dont want, is to destroy any hope of any contain, and allow the QB to get out of the pocket and make a play down the field which is the last thing this defense needs. Keep everything in front of them. Rally and tackle.

Yes we're running a lot of games. And we play the DE from the 5 and 7 mostly depending on the DE. We don't have much to play the 9. I've seen the other Crawford come once from the 9. I'm sure there are plays and players who otherwise have as well.

I'm sure its recency bias, but I'm worried about our defense just like I was at the beginning of the season. Our secondary was playing well early in the year, not so much now. We need Mo, but I don't know that we get him back healthy this year. Pass rush has been near zero all year.

Not saying I know better than him, but I did play college football and do have a trained eye. It's obvious to all of us that our front 4 is not generating pressure straight up, and these DE-DT stunts are not working either. Look at what DC Jim Schwartz (my college teammate) has done as PHI defensive coordinator with his wide 9 principles. They are generating a pass rush with no better talent at DE than we have IMO.

I wish we had a Jim Swartz as our DC. I was a fan of Marinelli but I just think he is just another Garrett clone.

We not only need better personnel on the Dline. But we need better coaching also on defense.

Other D-Coordinators do it differently than Marinelli. I guess all 31 of them are wrong and Marinelli is always right.

Marinelli doesn't like this defense but runs it as it is all we have. What else is he to do with the personnel on hand.

Stating all 31 other DCs do it one way and Marinelli another is disingenuous. He does it this way because he has to. Other DCs are likely in the same situation but they all certainly don't run the same defenses. I can't comment on them all as I just don't know them all but I know enough that those are all differently run from each other including Marinelli's.

We are doing very well with what we have. IF we get back our better players we will be like we were in the beginning of the year. You just can't have a poor pass rush and poor pass defense.

I think they should have DLaw play LDE more. He'd probably have better luck against the RT than the LT. He isn't explosive enough to beat the good LTs right now.

He weighed 251LBS when he was drafted. He looks way bigger than 251LBS right now. Looks more like 270LBS. He's probably stronger but he doesn't look as quick as he was in his rookie year. Most likely due to the weight gain.

This is what disturbing in the washington game , Reed and Jackson had some pretty open receptions and some real good effort ones , but when we are rushing 3 and 4 , still cant cover with 8 or 7 guys is a matter of concern. Need Church and Mo back soon and also inject some fresh blood at LB? (Neocha )

Church helps since he is almost a LB as far as run game is concerned and as DB can cover somewhat. Hitchens couldnt cover reed on few occassions i saw.

Byron Jones also had issues during the second half with Reed(he is a great talent). That was a good offensive team and the defense got left on the field in the second half. Unusual for this team in 2016 losing time of possession, still at no point did I feel this game had slipped away from the boys and the variety of their play calls, like the onside kick and long field goal, showed they knew playing the boys heads up was not a fair fight.

I think at this point our only hope is for the coaching staff to come up with some creative blitzes. Damien Wilson played DE for 2 years at Acorn State before going to Minnesota to play LB. Maybe he can be used more to rush the passer in some blitz packages.

Has the NFL officially suspended Gregory for a yr?

The last I heard it was 14 games but I haven't been paying close attention because I already counted him out after his second failed drug test.
