How to Pick a Perfect Watermelon

Did any of you grow up when the watermelon stands were around? In Little Rock in the 50's and 60's, that was the thing to do on a hot summer night and the two we frequented had lights strung up overhead and picnic tables with metal salt shakers with rice inside to try and keep the humidity down. They had them iced down in barrels and that first bite would hurt your teeth it was so cold. The seedless variety wasn't around back then and seed spitting became an art. Some county fairs had contests and so starved for entertainment were we that we'd stand around watching people spit seeds, acting like it was an Olympic event.

Around here (Kansas) watermelon stands were the norm. You would also see farmers that would pick them first thing in the morning and just load them in the bed of their truck, drive to the outskirts of town and sell them. My favorite part about it was the homemade "WATERMELONS FOR SALE" signs they would make. Over time they expanded adding different kind of fruit (corn on the cob being the most popular) and that lead to farmers markets being born.

I’m not a huge watermelon fan but I have fond memories as a youngster. Every Summer, we drove to Gatlinburg, TN to see my grandparents. They would always have a black diamond melon wedged between rocks in a stream in the Smoky Mountains. The best tasting watermelon I ever had

Yes. It has a chili and lime flavor.
I sprinkle it on watermelon, cantaloupe, mango and pineapple.

Choosing a watermelon using that procedure has never failed me...until the next day.

Not true! Watermelon injected with some good Vodka is, IMO, better. I prefer no Salt or Pepper thou.....

...I'm a thumper....if it makes that sweet hollow /echo y sound...it's probably a keeper ...long as it looks the part and not to old and dry!!!
