How we built our offense

The article by San Antiono's Osbourn focusing on hopes of big improvement by our defense this year & the many first rounders spent to get it done made me compare it to what we've spent on the offensive side of the ball. It was truly amazing what our offense did last year w/o any first round picks of our own. However, just like we did for the defense, we had to sign 2 very expensive FAs (OG Leonard Davis & WR Terrell Owens). The other 2 FAs (Colombo & Kosier) came very cheap as did sending a 6th round pick to the Packers for former first round pick (NE) WR Terry Glenn.

Anyway, here's how we built last year's offense & it was truly remarkable.

Even though Cowboys spent none of it's first round draft picks on offense, the offense was great. Our offense was a jungernault -- for most of the season it was the 2nd most prolific scoring machine in the NFL routinely puting up 30+ points. I've included every offensive player that I can recall just to show the scope of how we accomplished it. Our offense was neglected in comparison to what was spent on defense except. Anyway, here goes:

No first rounders spent by Cowboys on offense

Signed 2 FA first rounders - Davis (expensive) & Colombo (minimal wage signing)
Traded 6th rounder to Packers for former 1st rounder Glenn
Signed 1 FA 3rd rounder - TO (expensive)
Signed 1 FA 7th rounder - Kosier
Signed 1 FA 2nd day pick - QB Brad Johnson

4 2nd rounders - Adams, Gurode & Fasano & recently departed JJones
2 3rd rounders - Witten & Martin
2 4th rounders - MBIII & Free
2 6th rounder - Folk & Anderson
2 7th rounders - Crayton & McQuistan
2 OL signed off other teams PS
4 undrafted - Romo, Hurd, Austin & Curtis

BTW: Some would use above to build their case that we don't need use high draft picks on offense. But we forced sign more FA players & got real lucky on our starting QB. It's time to use a high pick on a WR (along with a RB) if we feel he could be a #1 or #2 WR someday soon. Also disagree that any WR we draft early would take 2-3 years to develop. We've developed our 7th round & 2 undrafted players in less time then that. It's up to our scouting department to do their job right.

Anyway, funny that the poor Cards seem to be able to draft WRs (Fitz & Bouldin). We'd love to have either of them. I guess Landry made a mistake when he used a first rounder to draft Michael Irvin cause if he had listen to some of you he'd would not have done that. Not saying we should over reach and take just any WR in the first rounder. If there's a good WR available in the 2nd round who could be a 1 or #2 WR, then draft him. Problem is we WRs will be picked over by the time we get to pick late in 2nd round.

That helps to put things into perspective regarding our offense. I agree and have been saying for years that we need to draft a WR early and develop him. Now is the time to do it when we have two 1st round picks.
