How would you build a team?

In the trenches.

Without a doubt.

Protect the quarterback on passing downs and run the ball effectively.

Stout defensive front that gets in the quarterback’s grill and stuffs the run.

Those teams are typically built to advance.

Great offseason post OP...

BPA: LT, RDE, QB, MLB, WR, SS would be a good start.

Agree with pitt33, great post!

Offensive line. Defensive line. I think these players may have the longest lifespans for players. If they lose a little speed they are still good. Get them established and bring in the skill players who have shorter productive years. That way they peak together.

And moneywhip a great qb who plays for a crappy team ala Drew Brees from San Diego.

Also there is no cap on coaching. Get the best and stay out of their way.

In this present day and age - how would you build an NFL football team today?

Build an oline, churn running QBs, save 30mil *and* the risk of locking in 100mil of dead money. Maybe someday you hit on Russell Wilson. In the meantime, you have a competitive team.

Out of the nothing we've spent in the last 15 years, we've found Romo, Matt Moore, and Dak. Looks like great return on our investment in QBs. We should invest in them more often.

Focus on the lines first but you absolutely have to have a QB.

You can do whatever you want with each but if you don't have a QB, it will not matter.

I know that finding a QB is hard, but you have to do it. Spend whatever you have to spend, throw whatever you can against the wall to make it stick.

Assuming I was starting an expansion team:

First I would spend big on a coach and look for innovators at the coordinator positions.

Like most here, I’d work on both lines.

Obviously, if I could secure a franchise QB, I’d do that first. Absent the ability to get one, I’d focus on the lines and get a QB that can use his legs.

I’d run a 43 defensive scheme and would try to get at least one solid pass rushing DE and one penetrating DT. I’d want someone smart at MLB that could help everyone get on the same page.

I’d want my DB’s to play physical and be good tacklers even if they aren’t talented enough to be great in coverage.

Overall, I’d focus on smart, dedicated players who played a physical brand of football. I’d go with a little less talent in order to find those traits.

With that base, I’d take my lumps, be smart in free agency and build through the draft for a few years.

Then take over the world.

I would hire Dave Campo and a great GM. I know as long as I have Dave Campo my team will suck and the GM can make early great draft picks . Then I fire Dave Dumbo and hire a real coach after about 3 seasons.

I still remember people who just thought Dave Campo just needed talent to succeed.

If I was to build a team the first thing I start with as a head coach. If I'm coming into a team that's already built, I'm choosing players to match my scheme. I'm definitely starting with the pits. Then the middle of the defense working my way back and outwards. Then I concentrate on my quarterback running back wide receivers.

from the inside out.
focus on the draft primarily but I'd also want some vets in my locker-room.
From the Inside Out definitely build it from the middle starting. I'm glad some people know what they're doing

1. Draft
2. Coaching staff
3. QB
4. Lines Center/LT...DE and DT.
5. DBs. 1 Corner and 1 safety.

7 players who bring a high level of talent and leadership naturally to their game. A coach and staff to bring the best out of the other 46 on the roster. A constant dedication to build through the draft as this is a young man's game.

Zero 1st round picks on QBs in the last 30 drafts. You get what you pay for

1. Hire a proven coach that convinced me he could build and sustain a winning tradition and would bring in people, coaches, and players that only had that one goal in mind.

2. Sit back and enjoy my billions only interfering when I believed there was an egregious error in judgement about to be made which I would reserve as my right as the owner. I may still allow what I think is an error to be made but they better do some serious convincing first.

3. Fire his *** and start over as soon as I realize he isn’t up to the task.
