An SI.com report Wednesday said that teams, under the NBA's proposal, would not be able to unilaterally "tag" a player to be their designated star, as NFL teams can by using their "franchise tag" to prevent one chosen player from becoming a free agent. Under the NBA's proposal rejected by the union last week, teams would only be able to designate one player for preferential contract treatment if the player agreed to it

They are kicking it around. Instead of contracting some small market teams they want to give them some way of keeping any potential stud players.

If they cant keep the star players and everyone joins up then you gap between the haves and have nots is so wide they mine as well just fold some teams.

And the Mavs have nothing to offer the Magic in a trade. If the best you can do is Roddy B and an expiring Im sure the Magic would rather wait for the chance to S&T Howard for Bynum or Lopez

It is an interesting concept.

A lot will be determined by the new CBA.

Under current circumstances I'd say he goes to the Knicks BUT the Knicks have jack squat to offer. Same for the Lakers.

Howard is a big-time defender. If the CBA became more friendly for retaining your star players he probably still moves on but at a price the Magic can live with.

A Dallas package of a re-signed Chandler plus Roddy and a 1st probably beats anything anyone else can put together.

Every team in the league would beat that offer.

But of the teams rumored to be on Howards list that is probably 3rd after Lakers/Nets in some order. And Knicks coming in 4th w/ an offer of Amare and his creaky knees

Ive been hearing a lot of random rumors about Dwight Howard having Dallas on his list of 4 teams he would like to be traded to. The New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers.

I don't keep up with the NBA as much as I once did, but do the Knicks even have the cap room with both Carmelo and Stoudemire on the payroll now?

EDIT: I guess it helps to read the entire thread. I see they'd have to trade one of them.

Most likely not with both of them, I doubt they will trade either of them since they just got them both and that is just his list of teams he would like to go so who knows.

The Lakers are the favs but I think the Mavs could put a nice offer up for sure, probably the Nets too.

LA can offer more than Dal, it's that simple.

yeah? You make a statement then offer nothing to back it up? If you're going to do that, don't even make the statement.

Bynum is a much better trade piece over Chandler.

LA could even do Pau and Odom or Bynum and Odom.

What can Dal offer that beats LA or another team? The new CBA is the wild card in all of this though.

Living in the greater L.A area having Howard go to the Mavs would be awesome! I think that might rank up there with me being the only guy in my local bar with a Mavs jersey on watching the Mavs sweep the Lakers. I loved that series for so many reasons. Lakers fans are almost unbearable out here.

LOL

The Mavs can't even enjoy this current playoff run before threads are started to ship them out here. I guess we're all bored in the football offseason.

Howard is beastly though.

An interesting team to watch may be the Bulls, especially if they lose to the Heat. That may push them to look for that star to put next to Rose so it could help put them over the top. IIRC, Rose and Howard are close as well, so it could be interesting.

With young bigs like Noah, Asik, and Gibson, along with numerous 1st round picks over the next few seasons, they have the assets to make a run if they wish.

The Bulls have cap space as well, they were trying to land boozer AND lebron or wade/bosh last season so they are definitely in it but for some reason I dont see them but who knows.

No cap space. They spent on Boozer, then their remaining cap on guys like Brewer ($4.8m), Asik ($1.7m), Korver ($5m), Watson ($3.1m), etc.,

Good part about those contracts is that they are all cap friendly deals, and will only have 2 years or less remaining in the offseason.
