I didn't get a chance to watch the game yet. Obviously, I've been reading about Dak, but how'd our new experiment at FB, Keith Smith, do in the run blocking game and did you notice him on coverage teams?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I'm not seeing us carry a FB. This ain't 1980 so really, why bother? Unless you got the rare guy who excels as a lead blocker, can catch passes and actually do something after the catch, and can work on coverage units, then it is just a wasted spot

The only way he makes it is if they stubbornly convince themselves they need to keep a FB and quantify it because he's a very good STs player and can double as LB depth if they go only with 6 LBs

you just described Rod Smith.

It was hard to tell About Keith Smith. He didn't look horrible, but didn't stand out either. I think he did more good though. Need to see what Rod Smith does when he returns to action.

Keith is learning to play ST's though, and rod already does. Both are still a work in progress.
I think it comes down to if they keep 4 RB's, or 6 WR's or 3 or 4 TE's. Most likely I think they keep one extra at the other positions over a FB at this point. But just a guess.

I have a feeling they will be looking for a legit fullback on the waiver wire; neither of these Smiths can block well enough to justify carrying a FB on the final roster.

I like Rod as a HB. I'm not seeing the lead blocker piece though. But a FB who can actually carry the ball once in a while would be cool. He's good at that because he a HB though

Will we also be traveling back in time to an era where such a thing existed?

I think we will see a lot about whether we carry a FB next week. I don't think it has much of anything to do with either of these players. I think if we see that they want to run Zeke with a FB we will find some way to keep a FB. If they don't then their top two RB don't want to use a FB so it makes zero sense to carry one.

I think you may have Rod Smith and Keith Smith confused. Keith Smith is the former linebacker and has always played on special team units. Rod Smith is the former RB.

This is one of the reasons I am pulling for him to be the FB. Though it wouldn't be too often, but he can be another weapon in the arsenal. He has even lined up a WR before.
He just needs to get that blocking down. But being out with an infection does not help.

It'd be a luxury to carry Rod Smith though I'm intrigued by him. I'm not really an advocate for carrying one at all, but I think if we do it should be a guy that offers something on special teams and as an emergency linebacker which Keith Smith does.

No don't have them confused. Rod Smith played ST's last year. Keith Smith just last week in an interview I seen. Said he was learning more to play ST's. And that at first he didn't know how it could effect your roster spot, but now he does. Now maybe he meant that was a year ago. But I took it as recently.
This was on an piece they had on him on Inside Training Camp earlier this week.

Keith Smith played special teams at SJSU. He may be learning a new spot working in the coverage units.
