Tigers start off season with 30-28 win over Class 4A Aztec

With one play, all the momentum shifted back to the home team.
Down 23-21, the visiting Aztec Tigers were driving deep into Alamogordo territory for the third consecutive drive of the second half. Facing third-and-7 from the Alamogordo 17-yard line, Aztec quarterback Ryley Hegarty was in his normal shotgun stance.
The ball was snapped over Hegarty¹s head, and Scottie Gallardo pounced on it at the Alamogordo 30-yard line.
Two plays later, tailback Carlos DeLaCruz zipped up the left sideline for a 66-yard touchdown and a 30-21 Alamogordo lead with 7:32 left, and the hometown Tigers (1-0) held on for a 30-28 victory over the visiting Tigers (0-1) at Tiger Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Though Hegarty took his team on an 82-yard touchdown drive the next Aztec series to make it 30-28, Dario Samora corralled an onside kick attempt by J.R. Helms and Alamogordo ran out the clock by rushing for 22 yards and as first down on the game¹s final series.
DeLaCruz ran for 98 yards on eight carries and was part of a 267-yard ground effort from Alamogordo. Clay Griffin ran for 114 yards and a 26-yard TD and C.J. Oakley ran for 47 yards.
The running back/wide receiver also caught a Dustin Thomsen 16-yard touchdown pass and threw a 20-yard strike to Josh Browning.
³Everyone blocked and did their job on that play, so we scored,² DeLaCruz said of his late score.
³It scared me, but we got the ball and did our thing,² he said of the onside kick.
Until Hegarty¹s fumble, the second half had been all Aztec.
Down 20-7 at the half, Hegarty and Cody Foutz, who ran for 210 yards and a touchdown, brought the visiting Tigers back from the brink.
Hegarty finished an 80-yard second-half opening drive with a 19-yard TD pass to Brian Lee on a fade route for a 20-14 deficit, then answered a Gallardo 38-yard field goal with another 80-yard drive ending in a Hegarty-to-Justin Harcrow 22-yard touchdown with 51 seconds left in the third quarter.
Alamogordo was held to 19 yards on its next drive, then Aztec began its final march down the field before Hegarty¹s costly fumble.
³We showed we have a very good team,² Hegarty said. ³We should have won the game, one fumble hurt us.²
Alamogordo coach Bruce Dollar and his players said Foutz¹s rushing pulled them off their first-half gameplan, which was an all-out blitz attack. Loosening the pressure allowed Hegarty more time to find his receivers.
³After halftime, they really came after us,² defensive back Tony Saldana said. ³We were kind of being lazy in the second half because we had that lead on them. But we picked it back up to get the RW.¹²
Alamogordo brought out the blitz package in full force from the opening whistle, and the strategy accomplished its desired effect.
Aztec had 92 total yards at halftime, compared to 402 at the end of the game, and committed two turnovers in the first half. Alamogordo also sacked Hegarty four times, three in the first half.
The visiting Tigers went three-and-out in the first series, then Saldana picked off Hegarty.
Aztec got on the board as Foutz burst through the middle for a 42-yard score to tie the game 7-7, but the Aztec tailback fumbled the ball on his team¹s next series. Aztec punted after Oakley¹s TD catch made it 20-7, then ended the half with Hegarty hitting Harcrow for a 22-yard gain.
With the game tied at 7, Alamogordo capped a 64-yard, all-rushing drive when Griffin broke through the Aztec defense and rumbled 26 yards straight down the middle of the field for a 14-7 lead. Foutz¹s fumble led to Thomsen, who threw for 74 yards, hooking up with Oakley.
Alamogordo scored first on a 20-yard option pass from Oakley to Josh Browning on third-and-17. It capped a 67-yard drive which saw Thomsen bootleg right and hit Tim Rogers with a 48-yard pass for a first down on third-and-16, then hit Sam Bonhorst for another first down on third-and-4.
³They have a good team and we¹re a good team,² Dollar said. ³It¹s the kind of game you hate for somebody to lose, but somebody has to.²
Aztec coach Brad Hirsch declined to comment.
