Remember when they promised to do pushups for every screwup? Haven't seen much of that lately.

It is the regular season now, not preseason.

I rather the energy be used on giving the opponent a beat down than doing some exercise.

What energy?

Way back when UCLA was winning basketball championships every year under John Wooden, he had a method of dealing with players who made mental mistakes or didn't listen to instruction. He never yelled at them or got in their faces, he just benched them.

Kareem (Alcindor then) tells a story of when he was a freshman and didn't pass the ball a couple of times when he was supposed to and Wooden sat him down. He said it the worst time of his life, sitting there and Wooden wouldn't even look at him. After a few minutes, that seemed like an eternity, Wooden let him back into the game and didn't have to say a word about it. Needless to say, Kareem passed the ball from then on.

That was a different era but it might still work. The problem is that it was college and this is the pros. Kareem wasn't getting millions to play and it wasn't costing an owner a ton of money to have his star player sitting on the bench after making a hue investment in him.

Still, I think it would be effective to some degree if the owner/GM would stay out of it and let the HC run the team. Unfortunately, we don't have that kind of owner so it won't work here.

Even if we had that kind of owner, the HC would never do it. Wade is just too soft and he's more worried about how much he's liked by the players than he is about making them better football players.

Either way it's too late to change directions as far as coaching style is concerned. At some point these guys are going to realize it's on them. Being a man I know when it's on me despite somebody else claiming the blame. The troops are going to surprise us tomorrow, or I'm gonna run across the field naked...

Since there is no excuse for these and 99.9% of the time they are the result of mental mistakes, cupcake Wade needs to levy huge fines (5-10k) for every pre-snap penalty on any player.

Thoughts?
I like your line of thinking, but I don't see any way such a policy could survive a union appeal. Maybe some player leadership might be the right way to go... like a player pool where any false start and you have to donate $500 or so. By the end of the season, there will be a couple million dollars in the pool, so I am sure they could find something nice to buy :D
