Hunting season is just around the corner! Anybody out there that are big hunters if so, post your setup. Whether it be a compound bow, muzzleloader or shotguns.

Happy hunting !

Well dove season starts first here in Texas, in fact it opened this morning. I have a Beretta over under that my father bought while stationed in Germany during Vietnam. It's easily my favorite fire arm that I own and I use it exclusively for dove and quail seasons. Bow season for white tail opens in October, but I'm not a bow hunter. I've got too many outdoor hobbies to keep up with as it is and don't need another month of it. November ushers in rifle season here and I hunt with a Winchester model 70 270 with a Leupold scope. It's nothing fancy, but I've been hunting with it since 1983 and it's got some sentimental value.

We're not a trophy hunting family and instead are hunting for meat only. My father, son, and myself lease 1000 acres that we take 3 deer off of a year (1 each) and split the meat 3 ways. We come away with a freezer full of back straps, link sausage, breakfast sausage, jerky, hamburger, and snack sticks (kind of like a Slim Jim). We're also covered up in turkey and we all 3 limit out on those.

My lease is unique it that it has zero structures and the owner lives out of state. He brings his family in over Christmas holiday and they stay in their RV for a week hunting. That's the only week of the year we aren't allowed on the property. There's no electric or water on the property so the camping is pretty primitive which is cool. We built an Adirondack shelter (fancy lean-to) about 5 years ago and it's been great. It's pretty old school and I've learned a lot over the years of camping without power & water. I'm a master dutch oven chef, can prepare full on feasts with a Coleman stove, and can squat in the woods like I was from a third world country. I love the old school approach of chopping our own wood, being able to start a fire, processing our own meat, and really getting back to nature. The two months of deer season from November to December are my favorite times of the year. Lots of good food, lots of good whiskey, hanging with my father & son, and (thank God for Sirius radio out there) football.

Although I am not a hunter or fisher myself, my grandpa was a professional offshore fisherman for many years back in the 40's and 50's all along the Gulf Coast (even ran a party fishing boat for a time), and a hella fine hunter of small game for supper. I now hold his antique (from the 30's) pearl handled 6 shot pistol, since my dad has passed on~ although I have only fired it once, at a styrofoam cup, and don't touch it very often, I am very proud of it. lol. But, I can tell you that you are a hunting man that I can admire and respect completely. I love your approach to hunting, and your love of and respect for Nature. Hats off to you, sir. And much luck to you and yours, this food hunting season.

Very good taste. I have a BAR Safari 30.06. Love the rifle, but I am terrified taking it out in the woods in East Texas. Too purdy. I usually carry a Remington 700 VTR 308. Although I have a lot of other choices, that one is very light and I dont really get too worried about scratches and such. This year, I will be carrying a 300 Blackout that I built, suppressed with a Silencerco Saker 762. Lots of hogs where I hunt, and 30 rounds is nice to have if they come with friends.

Mine is the Safari II ... BEAUTIFUL engraving. I have a Leupold 4-16 scope on it... it's a tough gun...

Not a Remington guy... I'm all Ruger and Browning... Ford vs. Chevy... lol

I live in Austin but am from East Texas... where are you?

Just a personnel feeling but I don't enjoy killing animals since the last time I went Dove hunting and downed a bird then it's mate came circling around and landed near the downed bird and tried nudghing it back to life. Haven't been hunting since.

That would be the end for me as well. I'm not vegetarian by any means, but if I had to kill my own meat I probably would just eat leaves and fish.

Happy hunting !

I'm heading out in a couple months to an animal conservation in Zimbabwe to hunt Shelton, the cousin of Cecil. Should be interesting.

Is that a Browning compound? At one time I owned a PSE (Precision Shooting Equipment) compound bow. I was pulling 70 lbs. with a Cobra release. That was a long time ago.

It's a PSE, have no problems with it whatsoever. I went to a hunting show a couple weeks ago down in Richmond,Va I had shot a Hoyt Compound bow, changed my life. Everything about it what so smooth from the arrow release, to pulling the bow back. It's an amazing bow!

And I tried doing the 70' lbs but just too much for me, I'm shooting around 63-64 I believe lol

I never truly got into hunting. Believe me, my PSE was nice, but it was just a short-lived phase in my life. I probably would have really enjoyed it had I stuck with it. I worked at the Abilene Army Store after high school where they had a bow shop in the back. I fletched customer's arrows and watched bows get re-strung and sighted in. That's when I got my bow.

Also had the pleasure of watching Ted Nugent stroll through the doors like a brisk west Texas wind, and head straight back to the bow dept. As he made his way back I distinctly remember him whistling. A deer call of sorts. Then he yelled out, "Hey Gonzo!", referring to my boss.
Got his autograph that day. He was playing a gig in Abilene that weekend.
