Hurd signs with Chicago

Hurd was really amazing on special teams and played well when called on at WR. We'll miss his leadership. Good Luck in Chitown Sam!

Happy for Hurd, Chicago gets a quality special teams player and someone who can help out at WR.

Ogletree has had shots and failed miserably.

Hopefully the draftees are quality special teamers.

:bang2:Goodness gracious look at all the Sam Hurd and Chicago Bear fans come out in this thread. Sam Hurd is just a guy, he can and will be replaced. As for the Bears, they got so incredibly lucky and fortunate to have the season they had last year. They won't duplicate that this season.

Per rotoworld. Now WR is a need

I don't know how it wasn't a need before Hurd left. Hurd is a career No. 4-5 guy.

Kevin Olgetree will have all the chances in the world to snatch that 3rd receiver spot now, NO EXCUSES!

I suppose this is true if we don't make a move, but I don't see the team being willing to bank on Ogletree.

That sucks.

Good for him, but losing that option at #3 WR and special teams captain hurts.

Having a 6 year player who has always been a No. 4-5 WR as an option at #3 WR didn't seem like an ideal situation to begin with. The hurt will likely be more on special teams, of course depending on how well some of the newcomers do on ST's.

Every team needs a guy like Hurd in their WR corp. He knew all the positions, willingly played special teams and was an overachiever.

I don't know if Ogletree has all those qualities.

Perhaps the gimmick aka Jesse Holley will be that guy, lol.

I agree - I would much rather have kept Hurd than Ogletree, but I'm sure Hurd was getting pricey for the role he played. I don't see either Hurd or Ogletree as more than a No. 4 WR.

Good for Hurd, hopefully he can make something of it.

He went to school at Northern Illinois, but I'm not sure if he's from the area.

Would have liked to bring him back for his special teams ability.

It puts squarely on the shoulders of youth the need to prove their own worth...and that's good lifeblood for a pointed team with base level commitment in it's immediate future. Good stuff in a sporting sense, really!

because Hurd had a lot of drops right?

No problem. Accd. to Jon Boles at Dallas Cowboys Times, who does the closest thing to "sabermetrics" that there is for the Cowboys -

Anyway accd. to him, in last two years Hurd had the worst drops/chances percentage of any of our WRs. Small sample of course - almost no fair statistically. But a good bit worse than anybody else.

At the same time Roy was slightly better than even Miles on dropped balls/chances last season. Whereas in 2009 Roy was the king of drops, among the very worst in the league. So there is some hope for Bear fans. Roy may be on the upswing.

Good luck, Noodle.

We desperately need a WR. If anything happens to Miles or Dez then we are screwed, it's as simple as that. Here's what we have behind those two: Kevin Ogletree who regressed last year, Dwayne Harris has upside but he's a rookie, Manny Johnson is nothing more than a PS player, Teddy Williams is a project, and Jesse Holley who is a sideshow.

Had we had OTA and mini camp I might feel different. At least we would have a sense of guys like Ogletree is improving but given the situation we are in I still hope the Cowboys pick up a WR at some point. Alt let Micheal Jenkins go I would not mind bringing him in

My guess is Cowboys will be using more TE sets with Witten and Martellus Bennett, even John Phillips. As thin as we are at wr, we are pretty deep at TE.

I think guys like Jenkins are going to be available. Not stars, and therefore not overly high priced, but who have a proven track record as a No. 2 -3 WR. There will likely also be available some former front line guys who are on the downside of their careers that still have something left in the tank. Either would seem to beat relying on a bunch of undrafted free agents with a collective total of 15 or so NFL receptions under their belt.
