heh, they might want to rethink that. ;)

This storm's path resembles the 1821 hurricane too!

Haven't been through a hurricane since I was about 13 and living in Austin, but looks like we're gonna get at least some heavy heavy rain.

Any tips from you guys on how to get ready and what supplies to make sure to have on hand? I live in an apt, so I guess that cuts the list down some.

Good luck to you and all those who have to deal with the hurricane.

Oh, and I've got the beer covered. :D
In ice, I hope. :) Lots of good advice in this thread. I've experienced a couple of em. Getting through the storm is just the beginning. Survival until you can get utilities going and fresh food & water can be tough if you are not prepared.

Lots of good info in this thread. Whenever Houston's in the eye of a storm, I simply evacuate to Ft. Worth. I do some packing up in the house, but I pretty much leave and stay gone until they say everything is cool.

this guy said the hype of the storm is way overblown.

https://www.gplus.com/Hurricanes/Insight/The-storm-cannot-master-its-own-strength

said some have predicted it a catastrophic category 4 and it's barely a category 2, may be a high category 1.

said the storm is weakening and there is no eye left, pressure is rising.

I think it has been widely overhyped as well....but that doesn't mean it won't be destructive.

I have friends that were fishing in a Marlin tourney off of VA beach TODAY...pretty much echoed that sentiment...said it was raining and windy. No big deal.

I also have some firefighter friends in the Outer Banks that have said they've seen far worse....

I'd take that for what it is...some areas may see worse. However, it doesn't look like a devastating hurricane in any historical sense. Flooding could be the worst part....

Watching local coverage of the hurricane and there's a reporter in Kill Devils North Carolina...with waves splashing all around her.

I'm not sure I'd want an assignment taking me to a city with Devils in the name to cover a potentially deadly natural disaster.

Do you have a telephone that doesn't need electricity from your home? A phone that you can connect to the phone jack without an power needed is great. Lived in Florida for 15 years. Stay safe.

My mom calls them "princess phones." :laugh2:

It's actually the best place for them to report from....as it's the first "city" you come to when you cross the bridge from the mainland, and for the same reason, the closest area to the escape route....

...but yeah. I get what you mean about the name. I liked it when I lived there though. :D

Ike was a Cat 1 the night before landfall. Came onshore the next day as a Cat 4 pushing a Cat 5 storm surge. I see that the media might be overworking the story, but I equate a hurricane to a fire in your house. How un-serious can that be?

Rode out Ike here in Beaumont, that was pretty intense.

All good advice here, and of course u can never have too much ice and beer. I wish I still had a pic of a local liquor store before Ike, the started at the street.ha

I doubt it'll be needed that far north, but it's always a good idea to fill up bathtubs with potable water in situations like these. Flooding, water main breaks, etc; can cause water to become a hot commodity. Bath tubs hold a lot of water. ;) Like others have said, fill up large containers and put as many in your fridge and freezer.

Charge everything you can that runs on electricity. Buy batteries. Fuel up your vehicle if you own one. Have cash on hand.

I love my little Honda generator in these situations.

Your camp buttoned up good? Predicting sustained winds of 40-50 with gusts to 70 in the Champlain Valley. 6ish inches of rain. A lot of folks are hauling their boats out but it is surprising how many aren't. They either don't remember or weren't here for the last one that followed this course...

Ugh...I hope so. My parentals left camp open for my wife and I to get up there in September. My little fishing boat is just pulled up on the rocks and anchored. I'm fairly concerned it wont' be there when I get there.

Our camp is some 90 years old...I'm expecting some damage. The roof isn't exactly leak proof these days, either. I'll have to have someone go check on it next week. Crossing my fingers.

Hope you guys catch a break from this one....you've had your fair share of rain and flooding already this year.

If it helps I can try and get your boat secured.
