Hurst still makes sense

Unless James, Smith or Vela falls to us I think this FO will be taking Hurst if his health checks out. Hurst will likely be the highest rated DL on board when we pick. Not only is he a excellent 3 tech and will work into rotation with Irving, Collins and Price but he also protects us against Irving leaving if he so chooses. This is also not a deep class for 3 tech but a very deep class for 1 tech. Based on this FO hx, FO doesn't value 1 tech in the 1st round.

We also have temporarily addressed WR issue and this is a deep WR class. We can get better value at WR in rounds 2-4 much like DT. Neither Ridley nor Moore are true burners which is what we really need.

Obviously we don't know how much this FO likes LVE but again better value in 2-4. Furthermore, the LB we pick is hopefully primarily a backup for Lee and Smith so why use a 1st rounder for that. Yes, Lee has injury hx and Smith is an enigma but still if we shore up the front 4 then it frees up LBs to flow to the ball.

I can also see the rationale for taking Landry as you never have enough pass rushers. He's already better than Taco. He also protects against Lawrence who's on a 1 yr deal not to mention a iffy back.

I will be happy with any of the 3.

I think Hurst is a bit small for what we really need as to the size of Vea. But I would not complain. depending on who else is there obviously.
Say Smith drops at LB for some unforeseen reason. Take him over Hurst, and look for a DT a little layer. Pona ford in the 3rd or 4th may even be a pretty good pick.

Yes they tend to stick to their board with the invitees.
Vea most likely will be gone, but Payne could be there. Especially if their is a run on QB's therefore dropping some very good defensive players.

It's a bit surprising that he didn't make our 30 visit. Payne worries me a lot. Except for a few games he's Tarzan but plays like Jane.
I wasn't a Hurst fan at the beginning due to his "size" but watching how quick he is and how he blows up both run and pass plays made me a fan. He's like John Randall, LeRoy Glover and Donald type but little bigger. Plays with quickness and leverage.

This kid is actually my first choice at 19.........couple experts say he has potential to be 10+ sack player. His burse and initial quickness are off the chart. Warren Sapp/Donald clone IMO........fits Martinelli's D to a T.

I'd be happy with either, but our DT play has been bad as a whole...not just at 1T.

I'd be ecstatic with Vea OR Hurst at 19.

I am all for this. Just that there are so many good DTs in this draft class that unless Vela falls to us I don't think it's good value to pick Payne at 19 IMO. You can get a good 1 tech all the way to 4th round probably. Hopefully the FO doesn't just ignore this and pick some scrub and call it good.

Irving has a lot of upside, but is incredibly inconsistent and is having trouble staying on the field.


I'll also add, with his position flex, Irving could still get a ton of snaps backing up different positions.

Even if I'm completely wrong, and you're right, he could still get a starters number of snaps as a reserve due to his position flex.

He didn't play exclusivel at 3T last year, so in now way would Hurst block him.

Just not sure another 3t is the answer
I’d prefer a Suh type 1t who can not only get pressure but cover the LB’s in the run game
Hurst is the best 3t in this draft if healthy

Suh is actually a 3T type despite his size.

He’s quick enough and powerful enough but he lines up as a one
He demands double teams which is really the key that lets the 3 run free
But just as important he prevents the OL from getting to the LB’s
That’s what we are really missing
We get decent pass rush inside but we don’t have that guy who keeps the oline from getting to the LB’s
Getting that makes any LB better against the run
The Rams are gonna be very tough to run on and for the first time in his career Suh probably won’t get doubled teamed much with the monster next to him
