Something crossed my mind and I wanted to throw this question out to the forum:

What would you estimate as Spencer's value right now?

I would say around a 3rd rd draft pick.

I think he is too valuable to us to consider that, but since you said hypothetically, I would say nothing less than 2 #1's and 2 #2's

This blows my mind...a backup QB with questionable stats brought a starting pro bowl CB and a #2.....and you think Rats is only worth a 3rd? Think we could get a 2nd for Ware?

Spencer, not Rat.

LOL, My bad, I guess I'm going blind in my old age...then yea, I would agree with a 3rd for Spencer then

For whatever reason, his name is mud on these boards and on media luminaries' minds, but parting with Spencer for anything less than a #1 would be ridiculous.

Of course, I doubt anyone would offer us that. So there's probably not a market to be made. He's worth more to us than anyone would probably pay.

Spencer had some brainfarts and overpursued a LOT last year, but I think there might be 2 or 3 people in the league who are better at shedding blocks. If you can beat your guy, you can be a dominant player with the right system and right coaching.

QB is not the same as OLB. I said nothing of Ratliff I think he would bring in more than Spencer and as for Ware clearly a franchise type player who would command a top draft pick in trade value

I did not say I wanted him gone but was asked trade value and you just said it no one would give us a 1st rd pick not so sure anyone would give us a 2nd but maybe. 3rd rd yes I think that is more likely.

However I would rather keep Spencer than to get a 3 rd pick for him

I would agree with Doomsday. A 3rd sounds reasonable. Being optimistic, possibly a No. 2 if the team is expected to draft late.

I was just thinking of options.

Victor Butler is having a great camp and Spencer's deal is up after this season.

I was wondering if it would not make more sense to extend Butler earlier and to explore trading Spencer rather than watching him leave next year for nothing.

Then again, perhaps it would be better to keep him to help the team this season and have a more effective blitz package with Ware, Spencer, and Butler on the field at the same time?

Yep. Spencer is worth way more than a third-rounder to the team.

The only way I'd consider trading Spencer is if someone wanted to give up a good CB under the age of 27, and I'm not sure I'd do it then.

While i certainly think Spencer has fallen short of expectations, he is at least a solid player, and Butler is still largely unknown. I can't see moving Spencer at this point.

I like Butler in terms of pass rushing but I have not seen anything to show he is an every down guy. What I'm hoping to see is what Ryan and what Eberflus can get out of Spencer. I don't think Spencer has reached his full potential

You're probably right, I was just thinking out loud.

It frustrates me that we seldom get good value out of players when they're inexpensive or ultimately cut them with nothing in return. (in Spencer's case we'll likely watch his contract expire).

I don't know that Spencer ever will reach that potential.

If Ryan and this defense can't get it out of him, nobody can.
