Home from work and unwinding before the girls get me up early and a commercial comes on from the SPCA. Being in the holiday giving mood, just gave a decent amount to an infomercial!

I have a soft spot for animals but seeing dogs in Christmas outfits looking for caring homes got to me. I am still choked up after an hour.

On a related note......does anyone agree with me about the government building some kind of program to limit breeding? Or at least to certified breeders only. I absolutely hate the fact that a lot of poor animals are left out on their own to survive. People who contribute to this make me absolutely pissed.

If you can not support a pet, do not get one, do not let them mate and do not take them to a shelter. I know some are forced to make that decision, but at least find a good home for them and do not even ask for money, just give them to some nice people who can care for them.

Man, I can't watch those things - I'll go broke. I made a donation thanks to a Facebook post about a homeless dog earlier today. I donate to the Humane Society here, which is also where I got my dog (who is awesome), and when I move into a place with some more room soon I'll probably go rescue another.

Unfortunately they could legislate all they want, but it wouldn't stop animals from doing what they do already. The worst are the pit bulls and the "bait" dogs in certain areas. The place I live has a huge problem, and the shelters end up with dogs that are just torn to pieces and it's heartbreaking. My dog is a lab/terrier mix (looks a lot like a pit) and I was terrified that if I didn't get her, someone with worse intentions might.

I hear ya.

We just took in a stray cat. She'll be "fixed" in a couple of weeks.

I honestly do not know what the answer is. I'm big on the "no kill" shelters, but I understand the immense problem with too many critters. And the "catch, fix and release" program for stray cats doesn't thrill me because all you do is release a animal back out in the wild where they suffer from a lack of food, automobiles and the potential cruelty of humans. I hear stories like the one recently about the 12 YO girl, out in Long Island who tossed a stray kitten out in the middle of traffic to be hit and killed by a car, and I simply want to throttle someone.

Exactly. Thats the problem. People take these animals in and when they realize that it is actually a commitment to take care of them they throw them out like garbage. Its not just household pets either. I worked at a sanctuary for years and we actually had big cats that were bought as pets when they were young and were living in apartments and houses. One tiger we had was bought for a 5 year old by her grandparents.

Absolutely not. People looking for Government to solve their problems end up making situations worse.
