Before you start thinking i am crazy, just hear me out. First off, forget the last 5 minutes last night. Its a tough pill to swallow, no doubt, but it was a fluke and we all know we have had our share of fluke wins over the last couple of seasons, the giaints, the seahawks and even the Commanders, all felt like we feel today.

Now why i am excited! Our d showed last night, it can be dominate. They just have to learn that NFL plays for 60 mintues,, not 55. But our young players are making great strides and are really coming together. This defense is going to be special. No dobut about it.

Our o line showed it can be dominate. NO sacks, decent running against one of the best, if not the best, run d's in football. Not many teams will rush over 100 yds against that D but we did ( if the ref's didn't make up holding calls). JJ is proving he can be a serious back in this league. This kid will be something special.

What i am concerned about however, is Drew Bledsoe. Dont' get me wrong, I think he is our best QB and should be starting. I think he as a good arm and don't make many mistakes with the ball. He is a perfect type QB for us, considering the type of D we have. That being said, I am concerned with his ablitity to read a defense. To many times last night, we stayed in Max protection and they only rushed 4. Its not overly hard to to cover 2 wr wth 7 people. Also, alot of the play calls were meant to be effective against a blitz. Swing passes, WR screens, short in's etc,, the problem is, they weren't blitzing and those types of plays are not effective against zone. Yes, payton should have opened it up more once we got them out of blitz mode. But Drew has got to be able to read the d and make changes at the line.

I hope this loss, as hard has it is on the fans, is a lesson to the young D we have. Play for 60 minutes. If it is, then this one loss will be worth it. I much rather they learn that leason the hard way, early in the season, then in a game with the season on the line. But over all, i am very excited about the potential this team has, not only this year, but for years to come. All we need is a true stud at QB to step up and i see another 3 out of 4 run,, or even better. Man, it must suck not to be a cowboys fan.

Nice post!

I can't be sanguine about that loss, because it was a shoot yourself in the foot extravaganza, but at the same time so many of the defensive players looked really savvy...both vets like Dat and Fergy and for most of the game, Roy, and some of the younger players..in particular Canty. For the second game in a "new" D. there is much less of the overrunning, bad angling, and general miscuing you see when defenses, even part time new ones, are being installed.

What really kills about last night tho, were we have two starting corners playing very well, and then we go get burned like that by disrespecting Moss' speed. Twice. Henry is a stud and Tnew is rebounding nicely, so even seeing Roy and middle aged Glenn near Moss offends me. Santana can be manned up and wussifed so easily. :)

Very nice job.

I'm disgusted about last night but it doesn't taint the season for me at all.

I have to admit to being very surprised by the negativity I've read on the board today.

The feeling in Texas Stadium last night (Or at least where I was sat) was that the offense was being severely handicapped by the extremely conservative play calling.

What I saw was a more than dominant performance by the 'boys, and there haven't been many performances like that in the last few years. The skins know that aside from two miraculous plays at the death, they got their *** handed to them last night. Save for the vanilla offense, what wasn't to like? Two mistakes (Granted large ones) from the secondary.. we would have taken that every game last year if it had been offered.

I see this cowboys team going from strength to strength, the deadskins on the other hand showed nothing, nada, zip and can really only point to lady luck handing them the win. I'd be willing to bet that they are about to slide, hard and will finish bottom of the NFC East. It's not sour grapes or anything like that, I was really surprised just how poor they were.

You bring up a great point Barb... why wasn't Moss bumped at the line? I personally feel one of the most underutilized and yet most effective ways of slowing down a passing offense is "bumping" the wide receiver at the line.

I don't know if you caught the Sunday morning stuff on the NFL channel but they did a terrific job showing how Jacksonville has kept Indy at by offensively the last few games (and this was obviously prior to them going out and doing another great job on Manning) but they showed how effective it has been bumping Harrison and co. at the line of scrimmage... it completely throws timing patterns out of sync.

So why didn't we do it?

Back in SB27 before the avalanche of turnovers happened, Buffalo stayed in the game due to the effective use of bumping Harper and Irvin at the LOS.

I love that technique.

You allow a super fast guy like Moss the opportunity to get a clean break off the LOS and you've just posted a giant "kick-me" sign on your back. That disgusts me as much as anything.

Same here. I was sitting in the nosebleed section, but everybody around us was complaining about both offenses. Neither went vertical very often. And as for the playcalling. It wasn't just conservative, it was outright mindboggling. I swear I was scratching my head on alot of them.

I didn't see the NFL channel thingy, Mikey, but ask any Jets fan what Moss' 'weakness' is. ;)

There's a reason Herm wanted Coles back in lieu of Santana.

Bumping is a double edged sword. It can and is effective if done right and at the right time. Sadly, the coaches don't have the luxury of hind sight while on the field making calls. I would not have bumped moss in that situation either. Here's why. The last thing you want to do is give them the oppurtunity at the big play. You are leading by 13 with 5 min or so to go. Their offense has shown no ability to sustain a drive (still hasn't). they have to score 2 Tds in under 5 min to beat you and they haven't scored a td at all, yet. So You invite them to throw underneath. Give them the 10yd curls, outs etc, come up make your tackle. make them earn the yards. If you choose to bump in that situation, and you miss,, then its just a pitch and catch and he is off to the races. In hindsight that happened anyway, but at the time, you have to play your odds. The odds just didn't go our way last night.

i've been afraid to post anything but i do feel a bit better now. i know in my heart it was a combination of several factors coming together at just the wrong time (actually 2 times) but over the course of 14 of 16 games, we were bound to run up against the law of averages sooner or later. we've had our share of those last-minute triumphs, and to give the Skins their due they kept the game close enough to give themselves a chance. if i am unhappy with one player's performance (and this is nothing new) it would be Cortez. that first drive if we had put points on the board we wouldn't even be talking about this, and that was an easy kick. if our kicker can't connect under pressure, and he can't from what i've seen, then he is going to cost us another game or two before the season is over. sorry to say it, but he is the weakest link on this team, and we're paying for it now...

FINALLY, a post looking at the many positives instead of the standard, 'Parcells is a jerk', 'Roy Williams sucks', or many of the other sky is falling threads.

While losing to the Foreskins of all teams hurt like holy hell (and still does) it's only game two of a long season. The D looked very sharp & is only going to improve. Top 10 by seasons end for sure.

The o-line play was excellent. (I STILL find it hard to believe Petitti is doing so well after so many years of struggling to find THE guy for that position.) Bledsoe had another good game. JJ looked great against a very good run D. We have alot to look forward to.
