Jones decides not to hire Jason Garrett in any role...then the fickle dopes here go ape after seeing Garrett turn into somebody else's great offensive coordinator or HC

"why the hell didnt Jerry just hire Garrett when he had the chance"

"he had all that info and history on him, but waited"

"did you see Garrett's game plan vs XYZ???"

"typical Jerry"

"franchise XYZ is so much smarter than Jones because they saw Garrett as a really bright future talent"

Well our rea problem is that we can't get a good dc like Phillips because thy're signed up so I think it amounts to a shellgame where we're going to hire Phillips to coach til he's ready, that way we get the dc we need, the problem with all these guys we're looking at is we got to hire em as a coach because they already are coordinators and under contract, and either side of the ball if we hire one as a coach we still got the problem that there aren't alot of great unemployed coordinators and we need one for the other side of the ball, sort of solves the problem as best you can..

That may be true. But any reasonable thinking person would've waited for more evidence that he could actually do that. Payton for example paid some dues before he was just handed the keys.

So unless someone wanted to promote JG to HC at this very moment, why couldnt a person have watched him be an OC for a couple years and then jumped on him like white on rice whenever you needed/wanted to as an HC.

It's not like at the end of every season there isnt 31 other teams with OC's that you couldnt throw money and the keys at to get them as your HC. He'd be no different. Unless one is afraid he would've turned Jerry down at that point for the same job at a different team.

Not only that but the nature of the HC position is to be hired to be fired at some point. So unless theres any reason to believe he'd be the next Bill Walsh, even if he got an HC job elewhere before the timing was right to offer the job for your own team, it's not like odds are he'd be untouchable for the rest of his life.

Still say if it werent for the fact that he played for us nobody would even begin to buy into giving him as much responsibility at this point as it's assumed he's going to be given.

This is why I can't understand why Dan Reeves was "to old". He would have been perfect to come in for 3-5 years and mentor Garrett while having one last successful "fling" (for lack of a better word).

The only thing I can think of is he wanted to have control of his own staff and did not accept Jones hiring Garrett w/o his having interviewed Jason first. Since the window was so narrow and Jones had to act, they just decided that there was more upside to Garrett than Reves and crossed Dan off the list w/ the excuse that he was "too old"...

I think it's more that Jerry didnt figure Reeves would be a sexy enough hire.

I bet Reeves wouldnt have a problem with the Garrett hire. For one thing he just wants a job. And for another since he's an offensive guy anyway he can just dictate whatever role he'd want Garrett to play.

But then you still have to consider the defensive side. Although I'm not so sure just hiring say one of Wades understudies in SD thats ready to make the next step up wouldnt suffice.

Since you have the same issue with Norv or Reeves, I know that if the HC gig happened to otherwise just come down to those 2 I'd take Reeves in a heartbeat.. hmm... maybe thats a poor choice of words considering some past helath issues. ;)
