Bill Bates played safety when there were 6 DBs on the field and every now and then would make a stop to the tune of about 4 per season. He was great on ST but very very average as a football player.

Beriault made more plays in one half than Bates would in a season on the reg defense.

They are both white, wear number 40 and play safety and that is about the extent of it. Beriault is more athletically gifted hurt than Bates was on his best day.

Bates played LB in our nickle scheme, he was pretty good at that. You missed one thing they both hit hard other than that I agree with you. I loved Bates but I hope Berry-O is a better player.

Welcome aboard BerryO and goodbye Lynn Scott.

I think Scott sticks and Reece gets the walking papers. Reece hasn't proven anything in games (and also from the reports in practice)

Lynn Scott and Bariault aren't fighting for the same position. Scott is playing FS this year. Unless we are only keeping 3 safeties, Bariault's play has nothing to do with Scott.

I agree Fuzzy.
Bates was a good ST player, but Berry-O is much more of a athlete and also much bigger...

Just me, but I HATE "Baby bates"...Nickname...

Oh and Reese is a MUCH better player then Scott...He showed last night he still has the range to get in on coverage that Scott wouldn't be near...

eh...... Berry-O looked good making the big hits, but he didn't look good in coverage.

On one play he hit the WR hard enough so the WR didn't make the catch, but I'd rather him get there sooner and deflect the pass away.

If the LB doesn't tip that pass late in the game, it's pass interference on Berry-O.

Just solidified him as a SS in my opinion.

My thoughts exactly. Regarding the first play you mentioned - he was out of position. He was half a second late, thus creating the need for a big hit. Besides - he didn't dislodge the ball. It was dropped before Bariault got there.

Second play - nuff said. Someone elsewhere said he was in position to INT that ball - no way. He was asking for a penalty, looking for a hit.

I am just trying to keep everyone down to earth on him. I am very excited to have potential at backup SS. But no way would I move him to FS, or Roy so that he could be on the field.

Yep. I'd be confident in his ability to step in for Roy if (god forbid) Roy got hurt, but I don't want him back at FS, we'd be giving up long pass plays all day long.

Anyone know if hes married yet and what his wife looks like, Bates had a really nice looking wife. We need to hook him up with a hottie. Then he can have triplets like Bates did.

Yes they said if he was cut both him and his wife would be looking for jobs.

No fall back here. :starspin

I had to roll my eyes everytime they said that. Puhleeze. What a sensationalist bit of rubbish. If he got cut here, he would immediately be picked up by another team at this point. "He and his wife will have to get a job to support 2 children." Soooooo is this supposed to make a feel good story? You leave college, that is what you are expected to do anyway.
