SMITH TO VISIT VIKES

As owner Zygi Wilf's plane heads to California to fetch receiver Bernard Berrian, the Vikes also have made arrangements for a Friday visit from Bengals defensive end Justin Smith.

Smith played for Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier when Frazier worked in that same role with the Bengals.

The Vikings have a need for help at defensive end because Kenechi Udeze recently was diagnosed with leukemia. Smith was Cincinnati's franchise player in 2007.

Washington agrees with Pats
Email|Link|Comments (0) Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff February 28, 2008 11:48 PM

WR Kelley Washington and the Patriots have agreed to terms on an undisclosed contract tonight, according to a league source.

Agreeing on a new deal was a top priority for Washington, who enjoyed his first season with the Patriots after spending the first four years of his career with the Bengals.

Washington didn't see much playing time on offense -- he played in only 37 snaps all season -- but was a consistent presence on special teams. Coach Bill Belichick often said that Washington could be counted on at receiver if called upon, but Washington seemed to be a victim of the team's depth at that spot. Based on possible changes at receiver in 2008, it could lead to more opportunities for Washington.

Are the Vikes going to win the free agency super bowl this year? Do they have a lot of cap room or something?

SAMUEL VISITING EAGLES

Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports that free-agent cornerback Asante Samuel will visit the Eagles on Friday.

On Thursday night, it was reported that Samuel already has a deal in place with the Eagles.

Samuel is looking for at least $10 million per year.

FAINE TO TAMPA

That $44 million in cap space has burned a hole in the pockets of the Buccaneers.

Stephen Holder of the St. Petersburg Times reports that the Bucs have reached an agreement with free-agent center Jeff Faine, previously of the Saints.

Per Holder, the deal makes Faine the highest-paid center in the game

In addition to Bernard Berrian, free agent DE Justin Smith is believed to have set up a visit with the Vikings.

The Vikings will try to keep Berrian and Smith in Minnesota by locking them up right away. That will be difficult, but the Vikings have deep pockets.

PORTER TO VISIT JAGS

Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports that free-agent receiver Jerry Porter will visit the Jaguars on Friday.

Porter would be the second new receiver added by Jacksonville. A trade soon will be official (if it isn't already) to send Vikings receiver Troy Williamson to the Jags.

Looks like backup cornerback Jacques Reeves will be pretty busy the next couple of days.

Reeves, who started 13 games in 2007, is an unrestricted free agent. He has plans to visit Houston, New Orleans, Kansas City and St. Louis.

Reeves is looking to become a starter at one of those places and after 14 passes deflected and one interception several teams believe he can do it.

YOUNG, SIMONEAU STAY WITH SAINTS

Adam Caplan of Scout.com reports that the Saints have reached agreement with two of their own free agents.

Defensive tackle Brian Young will sign a three-year, $12 million deal.

Also, linebacker Mark Simoneau will stay put.

49ers signings

The 49ers wasted no time hitting their free-agency shopping list. They agreed with Vikings linebacker Dontarrious Thomas to a two-year deal and allowed Lions quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan to be re-united with new 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz by agreeing to a one-year, $645,000 contract. The 49ers also locked up a two-year, $1.8 million deal with former Panthers halfback DeShaun Foster and a one-year, $870,000 deal with kick-returner/cornerback Allen Rossum.
