I don’t understand the Miles Austin hate.

Many on this board are “hating” on Miles Austin and I don’t get it. Every year we talk about giving the youngsters a shot to see what they can do. That’s where we are now with Austin, and that’s still not good enough, even though he has earned his shot to play. And he has earned it because all the kid has done is improved every year he has been with the team, so much so that coaches and players – namely the QB – were raving about him last offseason. He even played well until he got injured. But that’s not reason to “diss” him; many players get injured – it’s part of the game.

Now we many lose him to the Jets and many here would rather have their second round pick over Austin. Again, I don’t get it with all the high-round busts Dallas has drafted the last several years. Fassano was a second round pick = BUST. So why trade Austin for another risk at that? What’s so sexy about the Jets’ second rounder – is it that Dallas can package it with their #51 pick to move into the first round? Why to risk drafting the next Bobby Carpenter, our first round bust?

Sorry, but while Austin may be untested, he’s climbed his ranks and has earned a chance to start, and that’s more than any future high-round pick can say, and it’s something Fassano never could and Carpenter never will say. So I hope Dallas finds a way to re-sign Austin. And I worry that the Jets re only waiting until Friday to make him an offer to give Dallas even less time to counter. We’re not out of the woods on this one yet, and if we lose Austin and end up with the Jets second round pick, something tells me we’ll be looking back on the 09 draft wishing we had Austin over what we ended up drafting with the Jets' pick.

I too want to see what the kid can do, he's worked hard and is poised for a bigger role ...

I'm not so sure that it's "hate" but much more the issue of the unproven. I do believe he has the talent to become very good, just needs to beat the injury bug and keep improving in the process.

I don't think anybody hates Austin. What's to hate? A second round pick for an unproven player is a lot to dangle.

This is not hate.

That’s where we are now with Austin, and that’s still not good enough, even though he has earned his shot to play. And he has earned it because all the kid has done is improved every year he has been with the team.

Improved every year. True. But the question for you is this. His first six games in 2008 he was pretty solid and showed promise.

Please address this player that has "earned his shot at starting" with his December performance. Just to refresh your memory, he played in three games and posted one catch for twenty three yards and two games with no catches.

Fassano was a second round pick = BUST.

Fasano almost doubled Austin's production in both catches and touchdowns this last year. His style of play did not fit our needs. And we drafted someone who made him expendable.

That doesn't mean he is a bust. Maybe you should check your facts.

Why to risk drafting the next Bobby Carpenter, our first round bust?

Then why ever take a first rounder?

Hmmm...Aikman, Irvin, Smith, Ware, Felix, ...ect. The draft is a risk and PARCELLS took Carpenter.

Sorry, but while Austin may be untested, he’s climbed his ranks and has earned a chance to start, and that’s more than any future high-round pick can say, and it’s something Fassano never could and Carpenter never will say. .

Your emotional post is touching. But the fact is you have mischaracterized quite a bit.

Carpenter, yes he is a bust. But your theory of the bust so don't take a first is both naive and frankly dumb.

You build through the draft and that means taking quality players.

Does that mean we have missed? Yes.

Does it mean we should give up? Absolutely not.

Have all teams missed with firsts? Absolutely.

Does it mean your point has a point. No.

Up until this time Austin has been a journeyman WR at best. He is now touted at TOs replacement. The odds of him actually doing that are slim.

He may be a fair #2 WR. But that doesn't mean he has earned any right to be the replacement of a guy who posts over 1000-yards every year he has been here and made Romo and Witten better.

Not on 18 catches for his career and less than 400 yards in three years.

Remove you emotions and look at them as commodities. This stock has made minimal gains and you sold away one of your best gaining stocks to make this your show pony.

It ain't hatin. It's looking at this from the point-of-view that he hasn't proven anything on the big stage against the top talent.

And just maybe we have put all our eggs in a basket without an alternative plan if he fails due to injury or skills. And his new position won't have TO taking away the double.

I'm definitely not against TO leaving.

But I also don't want to go into this next year with Austin as the heir apparent only to find out the guy is Billy Davis. A one solid year and then nothing from the player.

Then not have the goods to go get a true stud WR and have wasted a year doing so.

The Austin situation is inextricably linked to the TO debacle, so tensions run high. I would think that a lot of those that were TO fans probably aren't too enthusiastic about a guy with such a thin resume being touted as a replacement game-breaker. If TO were still here, I doubt that there would be nearly as much controversy concerning Austin for a second (rounder).

I don't hate the guy but I'd take the 2nd round pick over him in a heartbeat.

Aside from a couple of big plays, I haven't seen anything from him that would make me think not matching an offer from a team like the Jets would be a mistake.

All we have to go on for him is his potential and a 2nd round pick will have that same potential minus the whopping 18 catch head start Austin has on him.

I think hate is a pretty strong word. I haven't seen much hate related towards Miles on this board. There is some intrigue over getting a second round pick for him.

Although Miles is solid and willing to do whatever it takes to help the team - some traits that I personally respect and with was more prevalent on this team - he has been unspectacular for the most part since joining the league.

I would like to see him stay and be given a chance to perform on a weekly basis. I think the kid has some ability and will be a big contributor to the team this year IOM....isn't he the one that Romo was raving about in the pre-season last year?

I dont hate Miles,i just get tired of hearing he is the next great WR because he is on our roster. THe rose colored glasses are hard to remove from some people around here and it is a shame. I want him to succeed just like everyone else, but my opinion will be reserved until he can prove himself. If i had to call the year right now i believe the cowboys are going to be hurting at WR. I hope i am dead wrong!!!

Hate is calling the guy crap and that he can't play. This is all about value and whats best for the Dallas Cowboys. A second round pick for a guy with 18 career catches would be more than fair imo and I like Austin.

Nobody hates Austin, just seems like anyone that even suggests he hasn't done much yet is labeled a hater by some.

Like many of the other posts prior, I think the issue is that Austin is still pretty suspect when it comes to being a WR. He's a really good return guy and obviously has the size and good speed....but his hands and routes are very suspect. I think he has improved, but I also think there is a fear he has almost hit his "ceiling" with regard to talent. Time will tell. Remeber...there is a reason he was picked up after the draft...many other teams didn't want to take ANY chance on him for whatever reason. All that said, I think everybody would be thrilled if he blew it up this season and became a star.

You must have been thinking of another board...or maybe you had a dream about Miles being hated.

No one hates Miles, its the other guy that is going to have a tough time from our fans.

We have a bunch of bottom-line fans here, guys that can't see the development of a player. Granted Miles has had some time, but the coaches, QB, and owner are very high on him - they aren't high, they poke and prod these guys and come to some pretty concrete conclusions.

Austin has shown he has the physical skill set, he's improved his routes and his hands. He just needs to work on being more fluid and he will be a solid contributer for us next year.

I got laughed at, but I'm more excited about 19 next year than I am 11.

I wont speak for the rest of the Pro TO fan club.

But for me. TO is gone, its done. Missed 3 year window opportunity. Over.
He is a minor footnote in Cowboys history.

I would give up posting on cz for a year for Austin to put up good/great numbers and help lead us to SB win.

If TO were still here I would STILL want to see Austin on the field with him. I think it would have been a great threat. Now, no TO... I think it gets harder for Austin.

We will see...

for my part, it's not hate, it's reality: he's still unproven. He has shown potential, I won't argue that, but I don't quiet see him as the savior some others on here see him being to this offense.

He's had 18 career receptions (13 in 2008). There are questions like how much did his inexperience play in how teams defended him? How did coverage on Owens benefit Austin? If he is indeed the #2 WR he'll be seeing a little stronger pressure from defenses.

Like everything else about this offense in 2009, it's just a wait and see situation.

Hate is a strong word that is no longer in my vocabulary. As you grow older you have a tendency to mellow..........Mr. Austin deserves a chance and I would hate to see him leave but I feel that if he does become a Jet it is all part of a master plan and life will go on as expected..............didn't mean to preach but it kind of "flowed" out.:D
