When that 49ers draft unfolded, it seemed like after each pick I kept telling myself "how did they get that guy..there?". Those were two of them.

I mean,
  • Jimmie Ward at 30 was probably no steal, but he will be very good
after that though
  • Carlos Hyde at the end of Rd 2, future stud
  • Borland in the mid 3rd,
  • the best Center in the draft (comparable to Frederick) in the 3rd, future starter
  • Brandon Thomas at pick 100 (future starter, not this year)
  • Bruce Ellington, WR in the 4th
  • Dontae Johnson, CB in the 4th
  • Aaron Lynch, Keith Reasner, Trey Millard, etc, etc
  • Shane Skov and others as UDFA
I just liked the value of what they did

I was very frustrated during the draft. We could have (HAVE, young people, not OF) taken Trent Murphy or Jernigan/Nix in rd 2 and then Borland in rd 3. Instead we took Lawrence in 2. That guy had better be an absolute game-changing beast. Oh, and we could have had Skov but grabbed up DBs who likely won't even see the field.

*sigh*

Anyway, yes...the 49ers kicked butt with their draft and they have had a lot of success in recent years. That may not be a coincidence.

I would probably lean towards Carter. I think he has the skillset for a MLB in this scheme. Just don't know about the smarts and desire.

Look for Ernie Sims to be signed, then they will move players around to see the best fit to replace Lee. I think unless some FA really impresses them, they go into camp with what they have.
There will be some June 1st cuts, so maybe a potential LB there too.
Then don't rule out a trade, who do we have and where are we strong at [hold off the usual we have no depth to trade, blah, and so on]
How about if Orton shows up, trade?

Also, is this the continued curse of some kind. Injury bug starting right away. Or a blessing in disguise?
Lee gets injured at some point every year, so game 4, game 7, game 12, right when we need him the most, only to have no one there to pick it up. well may have a back up finally in Hitchens for that, if he pans out. But a t critical time, he goes down.
Or becuase of his injury now, we have 2 months to TC, then all of TC, find not only a replacement now, but hopefully for the future. I love Lee, it's a tremendous loss, but enough is enough. Give me a little lesser talanted player, but someone that will be there for 16 games.

Sims? Guy has had about 6 concussions... Might be more fragile than Lee... No thks

He knows the system, and can be a stop gap and camp competition, just a name thrown out like all the others.
If he has medical clearance from the concussions, then he's a body to compete at this point. They have June 1st cuts, then almost 2 months to TC. But I would think they would want someone before the June mandatory camps.
