I don't think Front Office views Safety as a priority need

Kind of like not having a true NT, many of us have been wanting a legitimate safety for years. All we have seen as been low level prospects, street fa's or small schooled standouts. The Cowboy starters has been one of the worst for year's at the position.

MM's Packers always prioritized the position; Charles Woodson was one of the best fa's ever, Morgan Burnett, Randall were a few high level draft picks at the position Green Bay made. However, MM wasn't making the picks, nor had any control who the front office drafted. Their front office built the team, he coached the players.

The Cowboy Front Office is run a little different then most, it is a group effort in which the majority usually wins, although Jerry does have the final say.

The team signed one of MM's former player is HaHa, they still believe in Xavier Woods as a long-term fixture at the position and have high hopes for Donovan Wilson, who by the way was coached by our new Safety Coach hired.

Throughout the years, he kind of know what the Cowboys like in the position:

-Always covet athletic freaks for all positions
-Target certain measurable benchmarks, in height, but more importantly length
-Coverage abilities are most important, as they see run stuffing box safeties far easier to find
-Will McClay prefers taking prospects from big programs

Some of my opinions of top safety prospects:

McKinney-many scouting reports state that he is more of a box safety, where some question if he can hold up there due to his athletic limitations. Might be more of a chess piece type of players where you cannot pigeon hole him into one role. Some view him as a mid 1st rd selection, others have him more as a 2nd rd prospect. He wasn't on the combine interview list, which suggests he isn't on their radar.

Delpit-his scouting reports are quite similar to that of CJ Henderson, could be special in coverage, but is a real liability as a tackler. It is one thing to be a poor tackler at CB it is quite another as the last line of defense. Was on the interview list at the combine, his coverage abilities might have him as a fall back option. Kind of like McKinney, many have him either as a mid 1st rounder to a 2nd round prospect.

Winfield Jr.-he is one of my pet cats. Our new safety coach was Minnesota's DB Coach with Winfield apart of his group. Scouting reports state he is highly athletic, elite ball skills, reads and reacts quickly and is considered a strong tackler. He has a long injury history where many question his durability on the next level, major size limitations at the position. Wasn't on the combine interview list and appears not to be in consideration by the team. His size probably scares them away.

Duggar/Chinn-they both fall in that small schooled standout category in which Will McClay doesn't like to draft. Both have all the physical attributes, but many question their coverage abilities and lack of instincts at the positions.

Brandon Jones-he was on their combine interview list. more of a undersized box safety who is a strong tackler. He is probably more of the type they will draft. Day 3 who can contribute right away on special teams and adds depth at the position.

Personally, I would cheer a high level safety being selected, but I just don't see it. Until they do it and not a believer that they really want to upgrade the position.

They have ignored the position for the most part BUT they did try to trade for Earl twice and they inquired about Jamal Adams on deadline day.

I think they just keep talking themselves into believing in what they have and then reality sets in after the on-field result proves to be less than adequate.

Hopefully, Nolan cares more about the position then Dinosaur Rod did.

I wouldn't take a safety, RB or LB with a top 50 pick full stop unless they were a transcending player like Simmons or Zeke. And even then I wouldn't have taken Zeke at pick 4.

The front office has no philosophy..they fly by the seat of their pants..

New staff came in and all of a sudden big bodies on the DL were a priority..

It all depends what this new staff wants..if they prioritize safety, then the fo will too

Good point about the trades. Let's hope the new staff pushes the need of more of a premium player at the position.

Xavier McKinney. Enough said.
He's there to take and we will fail again and as fans we will cry for a trade of one midseason.
Xavier woods is currently one of the most overrated players on our roster. Plus he is a free agent next year.
Take McKinney now

It's clear are high on Mckinney. Which players would you take before him? From the group that has a realistic chance at being available

I'd take him over henderson, chaisson without hesitation. Ideally I'd like kinlaw but I think he is gone before 17.
Having a guy that can do multiple things back there for us helps this D no end. It helps disguise coverages and I'm hoping that the way green bay valued safeties rubs off somehow.
I doubt they do draft him but they should do.

Interesting. I think there is a better chance Kinlaw is available than Chaisson..and might even be a better chance Kinlaw is available than Henderson..Henderson is an auto pick if he's available..I can almost assure you that...not necessarily my choice, but I'm very confident the team would take him

Tradinbg for Haha is more than the old FO would have done. They've gone from no interest to some, which is a good thing.

I just don't want another corner that won't put his heart and soul into the game and nesh out on tackling. It's the most abhorrent trait that ANY defensive player can possess in my opinion. Why this team didn't grab another free agent corner is beyond me and I hate when the rest of the league basically knows we are backed into a corner. It's a failure that happens year after year with this front office.

Grant Delpit,Lsu
Antoine Winfield,Minnesota
Terrell Burgess,Utah
Jordan Fuller,Ohio St
Kvon Wallace,Clemson

just give me one of'm.

Facts

I have always wondered if the Cowboys changed their thinking about the Safety position when Roy Williams started to fade. The did draft him and he did well at first, but then teams started to exploit his poor pass coverage skills. Since then it seems like the Cowboys have viewed the position as less of a value.

I’m hoping the fact we signed HaHa shows that Mike sees it as an important position.

The feeling I get is that we're going to bandage the position up with HaHa and roll with average safeties again. Don't see us taking one at #17, and you make a good point that the second tier of safeties are mostly small-schoolers which McClay hates.

Dont forget we did try hard to sign Eric Weddle a few years ago too. Think he just made the smart decision to avoid this circus

well this a new coaches = so should get fixed
