Kind of like not having a true NT, many of us have been wanting a legitimate safety for years. All we have seen as been low level prospects, street fa's or small schooled standouts. The Cowboy starters has been one of the worst for year's at the position.
MM's Packers always prioritized the position; Charles Woodson was one of the best fa's ever, Morgan Burnett, Randall were a few high level draft picks at the position Green Bay made. However, MM wasn't making the picks, nor had any control who the front office drafted. Their front office built the team, he coached the players.
The Cowboy Front Office is run a little different then most, it is a group effort in which the majority usually wins, although Jerry does have the final say.
The team signed one of MM's former player is HaHa, they still believe in Xavier Woods as a long-term fixture at the position and have high hopes for Donovan Wilson, who by the way was coached by our new Safety Coach hired.
Throughout the years, he kind of know what the Cowboys like in the position:
-Always covet athletic freaks for all positions
-Target certain measurable benchmarks, in height, but more importantly length
-Coverage abilities are most important, as they see run stuffing box safeties far easier to find
-Will McClay prefers taking prospects from big programs
Some of my opinions of top safety prospects:
McKinney-many scouting reports state that he is more of a box safety, where some question if he can hold up there due to his athletic limitations. Might be more of a chess piece type of players where you cannot pigeon hole him into one role. Some view him as a mid 1st rd selection, others have him more as a 2nd rd prospect. He wasn't on the combine interview list, which suggests he isn't on their radar.
Delpit-his scouting reports are quite similar to that of CJ Henderson, could be special in coverage, but is a real liability as a tackler. It is one thing to be a poor tackler at CB it is quite another as the last line of defense. Was on the interview list at the combine, his coverage abilities might have him as a fall back option. Kind of like McKinney, many have him either as a mid 1st rounder to a 2nd round prospect.
Winfield Jr.-he is one of my pet cats. Our new safety coach was Minnesota's DB Coach with Winfield apart of his group. Scouting reports state he is highly athletic, elite ball skills, reads and reacts quickly and is considered a strong tackler. He has a long injury history where many question his durability on the next level, major size limitations at the position. Wasn't on the combine interview list and appears not to be in consideration by the team. His size probably scares them away.
Duggar/Chinn-they both fall in that small schooled standout category in which Will McClay doesn't like to draft. Both have all the physical attributes, but many question their coverage abilities and lack of instincts at the positions.
Brandon Jones-he was on their combine interview list. more of a undersized box safety who is a strong tackler. He is probably more of the type they will draft. Day 3 who can contribute right away on special teams and adds depth at the position.
Personally, I would cheer a high level safety being selected, but I just don't see it. Until they do it and not a believer that they really want to upgrade the position.
