I feel like Austin is here for one thing

To take the top off of the defense. This will only back safeties out just enough to free up our run game even more. When is the last time we have had a true home run threat? Beasley is quick but not fast. Twill isn't a home run threat and Dez hasn't been one for three years. I like what we did today. This team and even players needed a jolt and I think with the trades and the moves today we got it. This will be a much different team come September than the one that finished last January

Dallas definitely wanted to get more explosive players on offense in an effort to deter defenses from crowding the box and focusing on the ground game.

Tavon Austin may help, but I don't expect to see him lined up wide on the outside a lot.

He will be in the backfield and the slot for the most part, though starting there and motioning to an outside spot based on the coverage look will be in play.

Using TA on jet sweeps, faking off of it, throwing him screens and other quick hitters, will be more of what I'm expecting.

He's an explosive player, the threat of getting Austin the ball in space is what we want to use.

Deonte Thompson, if on the roster, will fill the role of the outside speed threat.

Hes not even slated to be a WR

RBs dont generally take the top off defenses
Think of him Dunbar

Dak needs to get to work asap and develope some chemistry with these receivers. The cream will rise to the top soon enough.

The Cowboys will use him in motion and strongly in screens...short routes that place him in space will keep linebackers and safeties a lot more honest.

Dallas has enough pieces to make this offense exciting and fun if they want to. You have a mobile qb who throws well on the run, you have Zeke, you have guys like Hurns who can play outside or in the slot, you have Beasley who dominates the slot when he's on, Thompson has speed, Austin with elite speed, Terrance Williams who has speed....this offense has so many options. I don't know if any of it is elite or not but they can go so many ways.

They see him in a Lance Dunbar role.

Which mean two touches per game and fall down and get hurt role I gather. ;)

Question becomes, who gets more touches a game? Austin or Beasley

He will get the lucky Whitehead plays that we’re a non factor last year. Maybe he gets some lance dunbar plays but that is more of an unknown.

The Lance Dunbar role was specifically mentioned in tonight's press conference.

Stephen Jones said 12-24 snaps a game is what they envision, and I couldn't tell if that included special teams or not.

Seems a wee bit optimistic to me.

Dunbar was actually settling into a nice role in 2015 catching an average of 7 passes per game the first 3 games.

Then he fell down and got hurt.

Austin is here because the Garrett/Linehan offense loves to throw short passes and they are hoping that Austin can give them YAC that most of our other receivers have had trouble doing on short passes. That said, when the defense knows you mostly run or throw short passes, they stack 8 guys in the box and run the safety in after the snap to put 9 in the box on most downs which makes it hard for anyone to catch a 3 yard pass and turn it into a huge gain.

This offensive line should defeat stuffed box areas...

He avg Beasley numbers in yards per catch
He’s a weapon with the ball in his hands, if he doesn’t fumble it, he he’s not a down the field receiver

I may be wrong, but I'll say Cole Beasley in actual offensive touches.

Snaps might be pretty close.

If Tavon Austin is integrated successfully, a big part of his role will be misdirection. Faking sweeps, tosses and screens to him before doing something else.

The threat of getting Austin the ball.

The problem is that when you put 8-9 defenders in the box along with 10 (not counting QB) of your guys on offense including the one with the ball also within the box, it doesn't really matter how great at blocking they are as it is simply too many people to navigate through (aka: congestion) for long runs after the catch on short passes.

Austin averaged 3.3 yards per catch last season. To compare Switzer averaged almost 7 yards per catch
