One of my best friends has a son who is a Senior. He is playing football for Desert View High School. Tonight is their homecoming game. About a month ago Dan, my friend, thought it would be nice if their football field could have the letters DV in maroon at the center of the field.
He called around and found a company who makes field paint. I forget where they were based but is was going to be a couple hundred dollars just for 5 gallons of paint to be shipped here. So I gave him the number of a local paint store I buy a lot of paint from and they do make a field paint. I bought the paint so they could get my discount and they paid me back.
Dan then wondered how to paint it. I told him my brother and I could do it with my sprayer, and there would be no charge. Yesterday morning we drew an interlapping DV on square graph paper and using each square as a foot we drove tent stakes into the ground and ran string to map out the logo. Each letter is about 18 feet top to bottom, around 12 feet side to side, and 4 feet thick. The left arm of the V starts inside the gap in the D and goes to the right. Hopefully you can picture it in your mind. We figured out exactly where the center of the field was so the logo is dead center.
My brother is a good painter, so I held a straight edge shield up to the string and he shot the paint onto the grass. The principal came out and he was so jazzed up about it that he gave us free caps and t-shirts and gave us 6 free passes to the game tonight. Wouldn't you know it, I am the only one who wants to go.
I told him that we did the whole layout using geometry principles. He said he wanted to have the math teachers bring their students out to the field to see the logo and how it was done. That cracked me up. I doubt they do it though.
I told them that when they line the field this morning they should line the logo too. If they do, I bet it will look really good for the game tonight.
It only took us about an hour and a half and it was kind of fun. I had never painted grass and dirt before. Thought I'd tell you about it because it was a unique experience.
I did have to buy my brother lunch.
