What... I don't even. How does PEYTON get in there??
I wish I could yell this from the rooftops.
These lists have absolutely nothing to do with statistical performance. They are lists which are 100% popularity based.
Voting player gets a ballot sheet.
Each sheet is filled out with only twenty names.
Those names are whom each voting player considers as the best in the NFL
regardless of position.
Now, this is the flaw which NFL Network intentionally created solely for controversy sake alone: all the individual ballots of twenty names are thrown together to produce ONE list composed of 100 names.
The result is what many people complain about every year. As long as the format remains unchanged, the same complaints will be raised
every year.
Again, it is a
popularity contest only and nothing else. The more
popular any one player is among all the voters, the more often his name will be written on each individual ballot. Since each voter is
limited to only twenty names on his ballot, it pushes certain names down the list and pushes others up the list.
Why would Peyton Manning be on this list? Why would his name be well above where critics think his name should be?
IT IS BECAUSE THE LIST IS A POPULARITY CONTEST. Nothing more. Nothing less. Even though I understand the format and do not really have a problem with it, I cannot praise NFL Network for the list because they do absolutely nothing about clearing up its true function with their viewers.
Sure, it is transparent, but only after viewers take into consideration how the list is put together. In my opinion, NFL Network could still net a highly engaging countdown by allowing each voter the opportunity of listing 100 names on each ballot for a 100 player list. Tony Romo and Jason Witten would automatically rise in the rankings if that were to happen because their names would not be squeezed out of more ballots.
It will not happen though. I believe NFL Network has many of its viewers exactly where they want them.
