I have an officiating question...

I was talking with someone today and we were wondering about this.

Say a player intercepts a pass is running unchallenged down the sidelines.

It's obvious he is going to score. If a player from the opponents bench runs onto the field and tackles him, there would obviously be a penalty. But What if the play happened on maybe the last play of the half or the game? The intercepting team would obviously get one play but if they fail to convert then the guy who ran onto the field is a hero.

Are there any rules for situation other than the obvious penalty?

Wow! Good question....I don't know.

There are a lot of weird things that have happened, so I would think this probably has happened.

I've always wandered about that very same thing. I'm not sure though, there would definetly be a penalty, the question is would the refs give them a touchdown, I'll look into it and see if I can find anything about it.

The officials can award a TD. It goes under a blatantly unfair act, or something.

I was going to say......there has to be a rule that does such or else you would have already seen this happen.

This has happened before and a TD was awarded.

It is entirely up to the discretion of the officiating crew on a case by case basis however on whether or not to award the score.

That exact scenario played out years ago in college football. I don't remember who they were playing, but an Alabama player came off the bench and tackled a player who was running uncontested to the endzone. After deliberating, the referees awarded a touchdown. I am quite certain that the same decision would be made in the NFL.

Thanks guys. We were kinda figuring something like that would happen. I knew this would be the place to come to get the answer.

If a ball hits the skycam, the ball is blown dead and the play done over. Ray Guy once hit the Jumbotron in the SuperDome with a punt and it was blown dead.

Ray Guy should be in the Hall of Fame.

He was a weapon.

What about last play of the game and the QB hits the sky cam?

I'm not positive on this, but I think that is considered "part of the field of play" just like the referees are. So I guess if a pass hits the sky cam it's just though luck, like when the referee blocked Roy Williams......

I have a question.

What's the black thing that the refs wear on their wrists, and the strap wraps around a couple fingers?

100% agree.

Great coaches would give their left testicle for a great punter yet the greatest of all time isn't in the Hall?

If kickers can make the HOF, punters should also.

Their whistle. It's so they don't drop it and lose it.

you know as well as I do Hall of Fame voters aren't smart enough to actually take into account how good the player was. Rayfield Wright just now got voted in, and Harry Carson went to the probowl for like an entire decade and just now got in, the NFL hall of fame is weird.
