Romo - one of the top 3 rated passers in the NFL the past three seasons, and people basically are done with him.

This is one of the strangest things I have ever seen.

I am not interested in arguing about Romo, but what cultural phenomena is creating this sort of reaction?

The internet and the explosion of content?
The now society?

It's because we're Dallas.

Our Highs are to high and the lows are to low.

We deal in extremes with this team. There is no inbetween.

It appears someone can't count. 12 + 1 = 13, not 24. ;) Did we tie the other 11 games? :laugh2:
I believe the 12-1 reference pertains to our 2007 record at that juncture in the season. The other 11 starts were in 2006 including the playoff game.

The reaction is because he plays in Dallas.

Sportswriters and the media use dallas as a ploy for attention.

IN the offseason they use the cowboys and romo's fame to draw people in, once camps starts they flip to we are so sick of hearing about the cowboys and romo.

Fans of other teams hate Dallas. So when a KC fan is just sick of his team losing cause they havent won a playoff game in the same time span as us, he/she can turn on the tv or read a paper and take solace in the fact that Dallas sucks. Watching Dallas lose cheers up fans of other teams whose teams lost that week or are perennial losers.

Now throw in the 24/7 media where everyone is a journalist with the right view of the story and everyone gets to jump in. Everyone across the country thinks they are an expert on the cowboys and they always talk about the cowboys in absolutes....like "They Suck" "they are all HYPE" etc etc etc.....

And it works. The bloggers have been driving traffic away from legitimate news sources, look at pro football talk. The guy who runs comes off as a complete moron, he offers nothing except reposting what real journalists in each nfl city have posted about their team, and he is always negative with the cowboys. Even if we had won the last two superbowls the cowboys and romo would receive the same treatment.

It is what it is. On weeks when Dallas plays on espn it gets bumped up a notch because they know feeding the machine of people who can all settle in and hate Dallas together is good for them. The espn machine is in full effect this week. They can change a veiwpoint on the cowboys team or a single player in a matter of hours with the size of their operation.

If romo played in Cleveland, Green Bay, Cincy, chicago, buffalo, Jacksonville he would be seen as a gritty hard working underdog constantly fighting for his team, a guy who doesnt quit and embodies the blue collar mentality of those cities.

Just look at the disparity in the way Aaron Rodgers is talked about nationally as opposed to Rodgers. Bob sturm is a packers fan. He talks about rodgers inability to ever bring his team from behind. He did it once the opening week. Last year he had the ball in his hands in the 4th qtr with the chance to go down and win the game and he failed every time.

Aaron rodgers has 7 career wins. 7. Yet he is viewed as the poor soul who hung in there and worked through tough times with many picking the packers as their super bowl team and Aaron rodgers as the league mvp. Why? Perception. Rodgers has done nothing. Yet he is perceieved to be a comeback guy who has complete command of the game. Romo is viewed as a mess of a human being let alone a football player.

It is how it will always be for romo. Playoff wins. Superbowl wins or not. The same media and fans who view one in one light view another differently, even though when their own criteria is applied it makes zero sense the conclusions they come to.

Great post Theebs, well said.

Half of you misunderstood the OP's question, he was wondering why there is such a knee jerk reaction among fans not the media. That said, I think the cultural phenomenon you are looking for is the "all of nothing" mentality. Either you are with us or with the terrorists and by extension either you are the greatest QB in Cowboys history (a fair number of these posts are made after a good Romo performance) or you suck and are worse than Quincy Carter (this board most of this week).

I'm aware, I was referring to the fact that he cut out the negative stats that were presented to make it look better. ;) Thats what AdamJT does. He defends the Cowboys and paints beautiful pictures, but he rarely shows you whats behind the curtain.

AdamJT is a great (and loved) addition to CZ and an extreme wealth of information for both NFL football and Cowboys specifically, but remember, he never bashes the Cowboys or tell you how poorly they are doing in whatever aspect of the game.

I'm a fan of Adam, but as most everyone knows here. I like to go against the grain too. I love upheaval, distress and chaos!

I am NYC! :laugh2:

Just all the sweeter when this "ship" does start going right.

They thought the "icon" of Tony Romo was a pain to deal with now..

I see someone already pointed out the 12-1. No need for me to pile on but it does make me wonder.

For a guy so good with numbers what does he do when he butchers one up?

I just get this image of an irate, red-in-the-face lunatic throwing his calculators around the room, burning his times tables and chewing the beads off his abacus like a rabid dog.

Anyone can see what he was trying to say.
