I too would have prefered Lawson...have always liked the homeruns better than the singles, doubles but I'm onboard with Carp. I think he's going to be really easy to like...he's got all kinds of energy.
Why?

We already have the guy who gets after the passer, Ware. If we got Lawson, we would have to move Ware to the strong side where his pass rush would be minimized.

Carpenter is a prototypical stongside LB in the 3-4. He can also pass rush. I'm not understanding your point about home run hitters and singles hitters. Carpenter is hardly a singles hitter.

I recently saw the Texas vs Ohio St game on ESPN Classic, and I was absolutely amazed at the responsibility and playmaking ability of Bobby Carpenter. The kid lined up just about everywhere in the front seven...I had to rewind the DVR almost every play to see where he started out...he's all over the place.

IMO, he is as good as Hawk and will probably become better. And a perfect fit for our defense.

Not sure, but it's a good problem to have.

He's a good blitzer too so lining him up at LB would give us 4 good pass rushing linemen and a potential blitzer (with pass rush skills) so I think he'll line up at LB.

Does anyone think that we'll go to a 3-3-5 nickel now that Carpenter is here and Glover is gone?

DL

Ellis
Spears
Hatcher?

LB

Ware
James
Carpenter

I believe that this is the same nickel package that the Steelers use.

We ran some 3-3-5 last year. And in 2004, 2003, 2002, etc...

We'll run some 42 and some 3-3-5 just like we have for a long time now.

I don't think Glover being gone will make any difference.

Ellis, Spears, Ratliff, Ware. Ratliff looked real good on the nickel last year before he got hurt.

Thats a good point ..... have not thought of that one ....

Think it would be next year or at least late this year before they tried it .... thats alot of responsibilty for our young guys.

Isn't this what people were criticizing Greenway about?

More the fact that Greenway is more of a finesse backer than Carpenter.

Greenway wasn't even on the Dallas board if you listened closely to Jerry. It was Wimbley, Carpenter, Lawson....in that order....IMO.

In reality, both Greenway and Carpenter ended up on teams that are the best fit for their skills. Greenway can be a weak side guy in a cover 2 scheme and Carpenter can be a strong side guy in the 3-4.

However, Greenway to the Vikes is a nightmare for me (until he, hopefully, busts). I am surrounded by idiot Hawkeye and Vikings fans. Now they will converge, possibly breed and unleash a new wave of even more ignorant, annoying fans.

In nickel situations, do you guys think Carp will line up as an end like Ware or will we keep Ellis there and have Carp as a coverage linebacker?
Carpenter will get a look in practices and pre-season I expect, and if he's a solid option for nickel end, he'll see time there in the regular season, IMO.

We know Ware is our best rusher from right end and Ellis' primary role may be as a nickel end. There's also the recovering Kalen Thornton, who has pass rush potential if his knee is finally compliant.

And Carpenter is a rookie after all, so we might not ask him to play nickel end with so much already on his plate.

Also, he is better against the run than Lawson from what I've seen. Lawson may be a better pass rusher, but we needed a guy who can do both well. I think we got him.

I agree, Carpenter is better against the run and that's what we need, because Ware is still figuring out his positioning against the run.

We will miss what Lawson could've brought to the table, the best pass deflector in the draft, a slightly better pass-rusher, and the best kick-blocker in the 2006 draft. Oh well, **** him.... he's a niner now.

I really like Greenway, he's from a hick-town in South Dakota, which is Vikes country. This dude is a big ol' farm boy, he was born and raised on a hog-farm. His home-town of Mount Vernon SD, is only obout 300 miles from Minneapolis. So he should have alot of support from his friends and family, I'm sure he'll feel right at home with the Vikes.

He's a better fit for the Vikings, than he would be for us.......
but I dont think he'll be a bust.

I've seen "soft" tackler mentioned with regard to Carpenter a few times. I have to think that at 6'2" and 255 lbs and with this now being his profession and the opportunity to work with a professional strength coach and in a pro weight room, Bobby will get stronger and produce some knockout hits in the future.
I'm real excited about what he brings to the table. He just looks like a player

Yes, I'm aware of Greenway's background. It was a good situation for him to fall into.

I still think he is overrated. We'll see.

imagine a line-up of this in the nickel:

LDE-Jason Hatcher
NT-Montavious Stanley
DT-Spears
RDE-Ware

OLB-AKin
MLB-Bradie
OLB-Bobby Carpenter

oh boy, that's some pass-rushing talent...I TELL YOU WHAT!!

What stood out to me in the highlights is that Carpenter appeared to have a great ability to shed blocks and had a great burst when going for the tackle. He didn't make big hits, but seemed reliable...

That's not a nickel, that's a 4-3. There's only 2 LBs on the field in the nickel.

Our Nickel will look something like this...

LE: Ellis (did you forget about him)
DT: Ratliff
DT: Spears (or Canty)
RE: Ware

LB: Shanle (if he makes the team)
LB: James (or Burnett)

Finally, all the Notre Dame arse kissing can cease!!!

AJ's a tough hombre, but you're all missing out on seeing Bobby Carpenter, who arguably would make a better NFL LB.

I'll take their kicker too, and of course, as my sig has said for quite some time......

I like this except no Shanle. I'd go with Burnett and James in the nickel. Plus I'd put Hatcher in as one of the DT's. We have lots of options at DT, Ware and Ellis are the locks.
