Cowboyjoe,

I could have saved you some money because the Sporting News Draft guide is just not good. They seem to get worse and worse every year in my opinion. I had to go out and get Lindsy's draft guide. Boy what a difference in the rankings between the two magazines.

I don't remember if ESPN had theirs out last year or not but I also liked theirs. And yeah Lindeys has been out for weeks. I got it the day it came out.

i just wish these magazines could wait until late March to go to print. That way we'd have much better information to hand. Dont tell me in this day and age they cant print it and circulate it by the first week in April.

Can't you get the same info or more off the internet? As well as the latest up to date info.

I use to buy the books that came out prior to TC every year, or at least look through them at the stores. But now, it's outdated the next week. Especially with the internet.

Pro Football Weekly's draft guide (the real one, not that cheap thing they put out earlier) is out, and IMO is the only one really worth getting.

EDIT The only one worth getting at stores. I think there are a couple of pretty good ones that can be ordered off the Internet.

Not as good as when Buschbaum was putting it together, but yeah they have better info and more detailed scouting reports.

PFW is the only one I've been able to find up to this point. I'll go out and look for these tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up.

Too often they try to get these publications out early. Which means they don't have the Combine info, making them fairly inaccurate. You can usually tell by checking someone who had a lights out 40 score at the combine not showing up in the magazine info.

The PFW Draft Guide (the $20.00 digest sized one) at least waits long enough to have accurate height, weight, speed, etc info. Plus they reference the first week or so of free agency in relation to the teams needs. I quit getting the others. Many are the equivalent of a mock draft made in January.....

well i like the draft magazines, because i have them right in front of me when the draft goes down. If anyone that i am not aware of that gets drafted by the cowboys or one of our nfc opponents, I can look it right up.

well my 3 favorite magazines are sporting news, then pro football weekly guide and then lindys, out of those 3 main ones. I can get a good version of the draft. And with the pro football weekly mag, you can get the free PDF version to open up on the internet and view combine results, more draft details, that generally covers about 175 pages of nfl draft.

I liked the espn nfl draft guide too, but i think they discontinued it.

Honestly, it should not matter that it does not include combine information.

If you want that, there are many places you can look it up.

I would rather read a scouting report that discusses what they actually did that matters on the field.

As for the two in this discussion, they are a mixed bag.

Lindy's is basically a watered-down regurgitation of what you find on NFL Draft Scout. It is okay to have laying around just to pick up and thumb through.

The Sporting News is an odd one. Russ Lande is a former scout, but he has some grades that are far from the "consensus" you see in most places. He was one of the few that was not projecting Quinn as a top 5-10 talent and actually ranked him as a second round prospect. Turns out how he plummeted, he was kind of right. I bought that one simply to see who he dinged the most and thought the least of in terms of the major prospects. He did a number on Oregon OL Max Unger, he basically said he might not even be worth drafting. That's one to keep an eye on.

Pro Football Weekly's magazine is not as good as the book, nor is it anything like it used to be back when Buchsbaum was alive.

Neither are as worthless as the one Street and Smith put out a few years ago. It was horrid and thankfully isn't published anymore. ESPN's was big and detailed. I have no idea why they have not put one out for two years.

I use to love these things but now it is much easier to have 4 or 5 sites on favorites and pull them up and quickly search for the player in question. That and Goose's top 100 are all I need to track whose falling, and what various scouts thought about whomever that faller is or who selected.

At least PFW's Draft Book has combine info. I'll take that one over the others.

thanks to the internet, with chat forums, draft sites, and videos.....as well as the NFL Network, I don't have to spend money on draft magazines to update me on certain prospects. Besides, those guys are no more precise than Mel Kiper....and a lot less entertaining.
