Cowboys QB Romo folds in blowout loss to Vikings

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—All those big-game demons that Tony Romo(notes) supposedly vanquished last week resurfaced at the worst possible time for the Dallas Cowboys.

Romo lost two of his three fumbles and threw an interception to seal the Cowboys’ fate in a 34-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC divisional playoffs Sunday.

Romo completed 22 of 35 passes for 198 yards, but the best individual season of his career was brought to a crashing halt. The Vikings sacked him six times and pressured him often. One of the enduring images of the day will be Romo slamming his fist to the turf in frustration as the game slipped away.

On the other side, one of Romo’s boyhood idols did him in. Romo grew up in Burlington, Wis., while Brett Favre(notes) was leading the Green Bay Packers back to the top of the NFL. There was no cheering for him Sunday while Favre threw for 234 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Vikings to their first NFC title game since 2001.

Romo trudged back to the locker room with a dejected look on his face and another big-game failure on his resume.

It was such a stark contrast to a week ago, when Romo was the toast of NFL analysts for back-to-back brilliant performances against the Philadelphia Eagles. He threw for 311 yards and two scores in the final week of the regular season to give the Cowboys the NFC East title, then followed that up with 244 yards and two TDs in a 34-14 win over the Eagles for his first career playoff win.

The performances—and a full regular season in which he set career bests for yards (4,483), rating (97.6) and fewest interceptions (9)—led many to believe that Romo had finally arrived.

Then the Vikings made him look like the kid whose fumbled hold of a field goal try cost the Cowboys against the Seahawks in the 2007 playoffs.

The Cowboys took the opening kickoff and marched right down the field with ease, until Ray Edwards(notes) sacked Romo and forced a fumble that Kevin Williams(notes) recovered to stop the drive in Vikings territory.

On their second possession, Romo’s fumbled snap cost the Cowboys valuable yardage and ultimately forced them to settle for a 48-yard field goal try by Shaun Suisham(notes). The kick was wide left, shifting the momentum to the Vikings.

Trailing 14-3 in the second quarter and needing a boost, Romo responded with another lost fumble, this time on a sack by Jared Allen(notes). The Vikings turned that into three more points for a 17-3 lead going into halftime, and the stunned Cowboys never recovered.

They tried to put a rally together in the second half, but their chances essentially ended late in the third quarter when Romo threw the ball right to linebacker Ben Leber(notes) deep in Dallas territory.

He deserves his share of the blame. I don't put the whole loss on him, by any means, but you simply can't fumble on those two sacks the way he did not matter how bad the pressure is on you and you simply can't throw that pick.

Those are on him. He needed to protect the ball like he'd done all season long and that didn't happen today. The O-Line let him down, some of the play calling did, and all that but he didn't do himself any favors with those plays either.

How did the interception seal their fate? It was still a winnable game at 20-3 at that time.

yup.

our oline was like paper. wasn't he sacked 6 times? and hurried a dozen times minimum?

nobody could get those passes off with that weak performance by our o line

That was the only bad play by Romo, the rest, I blame the offensive line for that loss.

At one time I saw a stat that he had been hurried/hit/sacked 22 out of something like 34 attempts. I don't know how you blame him for that blindside fumble. He had no idea he was going to get hit

I Can't really blame Romo for this game (though he had some screw-ups) the O-line and OC did the worst today. Glad to see Felix had a good game.

I blame Garrett, the offensive line, the receivers and Romo. That group collectively lost this game for us, but the QB should be the reason you lose and the reason you win.

So far, Romo is sort of Danny Whiteish.

There some posters on this board who have been miserable for about 5 weeks who have big smiles on their faces, knowing they can now come back and start the Romo/Garrett/Wade sucks threads.

Welcome back, where you've been?

You don't think those fumbles are on him? Tell me exactly who else is supposed to hold onto the ball for him when he's getting tackled?

yeah the O-Line get the blame for allowing him to be hit, and that is the biggest reason we couldn't do anything today offensively, but when you're getting hit you can't put the ball on the ground.

Period.

You just can't do it. Those turnovers didn't help him, at all, in this game.

But he's not the reason we lost the game, IMO. He had some bad plays but he's far from the reason this team didn't get it done today.

This was a team loss and that includes Romo. When you're the leader then you will take the most blame. It's just the nature of the beast. :(

because they only show up when when it favors their position. Oh, sorry for being a Litteral Larry ;)

Like Doomsday said, it just shows their lack of knowledge.

Romo, what the hell is wrong with you?? You should have the ball out of your hands in 1 second!!!

It goes with the job. Tony didn't have a lot of time, the line didn't help him and he lost trust in his receivers except for Witten and his tight ends.

Romo is not THE reason we lost. But hes gotta hold on to the ball no matter whos gunning for him, and that INT was just turrble.
He had his mishaps too, but hes not a major reason we lost. O-line was.
