I know we need to sign Hamlin, but we need to sign Canty too,

I know we need to sign Hamlin, and I totally agree we need to sign him, not sure if the Cowboys neeeds to sign him for 6=7 million a year, but we do need to sign Hamlin, he reads the defense, calls the signals, something that Roy Williams sure cant do.

Yet, we need to sign Chris Canty too, first reason is he is our bread and butter play with Canty at RDE, protecting linebackers on running plays, and Canty is slowly improving his pass rush. Canty reminds me of a young Leon Lett, now is Canty going to be just as good, maybe not, but to my mind Canty will be good.

In a 3=4 defense you need big strong DE's to occupy the offensive tackles and guards, and Canty is simply that kinda of a guy, at 6=6 298 or so. Canty will only get better. So, we definitely need Canty, if you look at all of the great 3-4 defemses. they had Hampton for the Bears, Ray Childress for the Oilers, Richard Semour for the Patriots, you need a big strong DE in the 3-4.

We should have enough money maybe to get Hamlin signed if we can get him signed to a 5 or 6 year deal, and first couple of years cap friendly with a big signing bonus. Then, lock up Canty.

Next, year, we need to lock up Tank Johnson, Burnett, Hurd, Austin if both of those WRs work out, and Ware, then we will be loaded for a 5-7 year run.

I really think if the choice comes down to Canty or Hamlin, Hamlin should be sent walking. Good, young DL are harder to find then safeties. I think Canty is going to have a breakout year this year as he was showing signs of really coming on over the last half of 2007. Ideally we sign both but I just don't think safeties are worth the going market rate which has been inflated by the Raiders.

We just need to get used to the concept that not only do we not "need" to keep everyone, it's not possible to do so in a capped world. Every franchise that's been good for several years has learned to deal with letting good players go, and we'll have to also.

And I'm not sure you'd want to keep everyone anyway. I don't think you pay everyone and say "Okay, you're all good and you got paid, now go win a bunch of Super Bowls". It's healthy to have young, hungry, relatively underpaid players fighting their way up the ladder.

I might be the only guy, but I'd rather resign Canty and make Hamlin play out his franchise tag. That way we give Pat Watkins/Courtney Brown another year to get experience, and then we let Hamlin walk next year, and draft a safety, or let one of the young guys step up if they're ready.

Or if Roy keeps playing for Jesus instead of for his teammates, we cut him after this year and resign Hamlin to the money he wants and put somebody else at free safety. I see no reason to rush to sign Hamlin, especially since his franchise tag isn't even that high.

With the labor deal being axed. It's gonna be harder working the deals because of the 30% rule (I think thats the figure) on their base salary increase from year to year. To bad when we did the Barber, TO deals that Hamlins reps. wouldn't follow along. :(

I agree about the Canty part. I just don't want next year to have to worry about double holes at safety, Hamlin bolts, Roy bombs, our young guys don't step up and penciling in rookies. Alot of ? marks. Also Henry's age? Can he hold up at one of the safety positions?

If we sign Hamlin, use Roy's money to offset Hamlin's contract. Then that leaves one hole next year.

If Roy only plays in the base D, what % of plays will that be. Does it justify his contract? This is a passing league now.

thats something i didnt think of guys, about roy next year, i think his cap is more friendlier next year, possibly trade him next year or release him,

then we can move hamlin to strong safety, and let brown take over at fs, or draft a fs.

thats of course if roy williams doesnt pan out this year;

sure, id like to keeep both, roy and hamlin and canty, let this veteran group be champions for 5-7 years, but like some guys pointed out, you cant keep all of them due to salary cap;

Once Hamlin is signed this weekend then we should see Canty signed by training camp. Johnson probably won't get a contract until November which is when Jerry seems to do some extensions and probably see a couple others done at the same time, i.e. Colombo and Ware.

I don't think 1 has anything to do with the other. Canty can easily wait til next year.

Don't wait til next year for Canty. He'll be a free agent and other 3 4 defensive teams might be interested. Thats all we need is a bidding war with the TUNA. We could sign him in the middle of the season like Ratlif. Canty is the DE we need to keep. Put Spears out there if need be. I know he is under contract, just saying.
