I wrote the kid off as a bust cause I had insanely high expectations for him too soon. i'm glad to be eating crow now cause he's starting to play like I thought he was capable of playing. I still think he can and will be even better than he is now. but the reason why he's playing so well right now is because he's not thinking anymore he's reacting and most importantly he's now having fun. I see him smiling after almost every play just like Felix does.

Very true... Good point.

I looked at the film.

Medically, I know the cause of his problem is a palsy of the 7th cranial nerve on his right side causing partial paralysis of the right side of his face.

In most places in the USA this has no definite known cause and is called a Bell's palsy. Most people's recover more than Anthony's has. He may very well "sleep with one eye open" and may need to patch it shut or put in an eye lubricant to prevent the cornea from drying out.

I only mention it because some people are actually horrified by this disfigurement. So try not to make too big a deal of it if you see someone on the street with the same issue.

Weird. I never noticed it. You can even tell by his lips. The right side of his mouth doesn't move.

It may have just recently happened. When I got Bell's Palsy it came on in the middle of the night. I woke up in the morning and the left side of my face was paralyzed. After a few weeks it went away. I had to wear a patch over my eye, the first couple of days, because I couldn't blink. That's what makes me think this is fresh. It should wear off. Most people I know, who have had it, show no lingering evidence. Or if they do it's very slight.

Theo, you're right.

You can also see that his right eyebrow doesn't move up when the left one does.

He probably can't "crinkle" the right side of his nose.

This nerve also controls teardrop formation from the eyes and salivation. Incorrect reinnervation from this type of injury can cause "crocodile tears" when the nerves that are supposed to go to the salivary gland end up growing back up to the tear ducts causing people to cry when they eat.

Unfortunately while most people do recover quite well there is a sizeable minority that does not.

Luckily that's only a minority. It's very unnerving (no pun intended) when half your face doesn't work. We get many people come in to the ER, with this, who think they've had a stroke. There are actually facial excercises that are "suggested" to our patients but other than steroids there isn't too much that can be done except to wait.

Reggie Swinton had a case of palsy pop up while he was here. It quickly went away, though. Hopefully Spencer is as fortunate.
