I love the job Jerome Henderson is doing

After all the years of Dave Campo's "give ten yards of cushion" strategy it is a welcome relief to read all the reports of man to man, press coverage being utilized effectively by Carr, Claiborne and Scandrick thus far in camp. This guy knows what he is doing and I'm so glad that no longer will we be forced to watch teams get easy first downs on 3rd and 6 because our DBs are playing behind the line to gain. I expect more sacks, pressures and turnovers as a result of QB not having as many easy throws this year.

I doubt they will be in man coverage on every down though (or bump and run)

I hate it when CBs play zone coverage. Zone is good for LBs and Safeties, but I like the CB to be up in the WRs face at all times.

Sidenote: Phil Costa is the best player on the team this year.

Yea, I think Jerome brings an aggressiveness to the backfield that was sorely lacking

Ill wait until i watch the games. But i am encouraged by a lot of the coaching staff rather then the players on the roster.

Like someone else said, I don't think they will play man press every down - just as long as they play a bit tighter and PLAY THE BALL I will be very happy

Gasp!!

is that legal in football? ;)

if we do this we might actually intercept a ball... then what?

Yeah lets have the cb's play man and everyone else play zone... see what happens.

And if an average player is the best on our team we'll win 3 games max.

You can play zone press. Tampa 2.

I think my worst memories from last year were from Newman and Scandrick when they would have inside position on a WR and for some explainable reason move to the back of the WR and try to go over top of him.

It was soooooo frustrating!

You can press in zone, in fact the Tampa 2 defense is based around corners pressing before dropping into their zones.

However, I' not saying press every play, just that we won't be ropping 10 yards off anymore.

I'm trying to follow the logic here.

Was Campo just going rogue and ignoring Rob Ryan's instructions to have the corners play up on WRs, and now Jerome Henderson is in showing Rob how it's done? In which case we should probably fire Rob for not saying "Yo Campo it's 3rd and medium maybe we could play some tighter coverage here?"

Or were they maybe just working with what they had (crap for the most part, sorry Newman) and now that we've made a huge investment to upgrade the corner position we have players who have the ability to get up on a man and press him?

I think it will be a much better defense in coverage because of it.
But it will still be a work in progress. Expect some mistakes the first few games. Aftr 4 or 5 games, will show a big improvememnt.

Just my opinion though. And hope they go like gang busters from the start.

The biggest thing, is that we brought in players who like to attack the ball...on top of that, Henderson teaches players to look back for the ball.

So players like O scan, will not have that trouble anymore.

That's a great question. I saw NO difference in the way the DB's played under Wade and then Rob. Jenks would always be in the face of his WR, and Newman would be 10 yds off of his. It looked all Campo to me. Plus I think Rob probably trusted a SB coach with skins on the wall. I also think that is the only way Newman can play, or feels comfortable. Could you see Newman try to play bump and run with Victor Cruz?? See ya!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this is the case. Newman was getting burnt on deep routes, even with the cushion.

And you've hit it.

Every NFL defensive coordinator would LOVE to be able to bump and run every play. And you'll see them try. Until Victor Cruz torches Terrence Newman for an 80 yarder.

Dave Campo coached Rashean Mathis to be physical (and get 14 INTs in three years) because he could do that.

And there will be plenty of situations this year where we sit our CBs back 10 yards because there are advantages to keeping the play in front of you. If you're pressing and one of your guys gets beat off the line suddenly he's 1 on 1 with a safety and that's not good.

every year you see new coaches come in. "We're gonna be aggressive, an attacking defense". Yeah that's what they ALL want to do. Even freaking Dave Campo. But with today's rules, if you try to do that all the time you are begging for them to spread you out, find your Alan Ball or 2011 Terrence Newman and pick on him unmercifully.

So I just don't buy this "Coach X is going to make all the difference in the world" stuff. Maybe. Maybe they can instill some more discipline, focus, a little technique correction here and there. But what's really going to make a difference? Better talent. Talent that can actually go out there and accomplish the coach's vision.
