Not sure if any of you know Anthony Cook DE/LB that played for the Oilers, then Commanders, and later retired. I got his autograph on a card, thats all i had with me, his number was # 78 in 1995 for the Houston Oilers. I talked to one of the nurses, and she said, oh sure, alot of the players come in to that hospital, football players, basketball players, and baseball etc... All are pretty nice she said and humble.

I asked him some things that confirmed my thoughts on training camp. As most of you from what i heard and read, Ex Coach Wade had the Cowboys players work out in pads only 3 times during that 5 week span of training camp.

I asked Mr Cook about this, and he said are you serious, your kidding me, you need to at least 2 times a week, be in full pads hitting and tackling, especially the offensive and defensive line. Also, if you dont, your muscle condition will tear down, if your not hitting and tackling, and you get soft. He said what they would do in training camp, at least practice in full pads, at least in the morning, (at least twice during the week) and then get in the pool in afternoon. Still shook his head though when I told him how the Cowboys practiced under Wade in camp. Said, he should know better than that. Said, that really no player wants training camp, but you need it to get in shape and be ready to hit and be hit, and play mentally and physically.

Then, he said like opposing teams will sense your lack of aggression, and you not being ready to hit etc, and come after you. Best way I can explain it,

Also said, from what he saw, the Cowboys defensive line just didnt play like they should have, kinda pointed to our lack of defensive linemen, playing like they should have. Said, problem was our defense, not Romo. Where I was getting my botox shot in my adams apple, (have to get that every 3 months or so, or could lose my voice completely), he said that the Cowboys looked like they werent ready, which pointed to lack of a real training camp. Best I remember out of the 5 weeks of training camp, when I first asked him how many times did he think the Cowboys practiced in full pads, he said should hve been at least 12 times or more. But couldnt believe they were coached like that, but agreed with me, during the season, they acted like they werent ready, is one of the reasons why they got beat, not being physically and mentally ready.

I asked him about playing the Cowboys and he said, he told the Cowboys when he was going to be drafted not to draft him. He wouldnt play for the Cowboys. Also, that on a Thursday night, they beat the Cowboys and really knocked out some of our players in that game.

But Anthony Cook also said that Erik Williams were monsters to get around, once they got their hands on you, it was all over. I asked him if he ever met The Moose in the hole. He said yes, was real tough when you were playing against Erik And Larry Allen and here would come the Ram, the Moose through the hole to clear the hole for running back to run through. That was tough he said. Gosh, I miss the good ole days with Erik, Larry and the Moose, with Nate Newton too.

He said, only thing that was a downer, was when he was with the skins, and they went to the championship game, playing great defense, and all they needed was to get one little field goal, and they would have won and gone on to the superbowl that year.

Mr Cook is still thick, looked good too, like he still could play alittle. I told him about the cowboyszone, and welcomed him to the board, if he wanted to come in and post where I post this, if any of you had questions. I dont know if he will or not, but I thought I would share this.

Said he retired, when going to the Jets, had no regrets playing and he loved the game, giving it his all. Thats the kind of player I like, that loved the game. And played hard. Said, he had to retire because of his knees, etc.. and wanted to be able to walk, so he retired. Played some with the Jets players that were young too, but then he retired, because Jets were building as he was going out.

Just thought I would share that.

thats pretty cool joe

thought some of you would like it, she said, some guy, a big basketball star comes in all the time, Owan, something like that, and he is a nice guy,

maybe when i go back again sometime, i might meet another player, most likely an oiler, or texan, but maybe get another story from him on playiing against the cowboys, his thoughts, etc...

i dont keep up with basketball or baseball, etc, but she said this was one of the stars that played for the houston basketball team and he is real tall,

yeah thats him, told you, im not up on basketball or baseball

now cowboys trivia stuff and draft stuff, look out!

i laugh at one of my friends all the time, he calls and says so and so was first draft pick number one overall or other cowboys trivia stuff, and its easy stuff, i even give him hints and he still doesnt know

2 years in a row one time, i was in a contest cowboys trivia stuff and i was beating the opponents hands down

i even had to straigthen out the guy that was giving the contest, because he had one of the subjects wrong,

he even said i was wrong on another one, during contest, and i emailed him direct proof i was right,

most of cowboys stuff and draft stuff i know, :starspin

i always get tickled when hostile has some trivia stuff and guys are guessing stuff right and left, finally someone gets it

:D no brag, just fact, granted some things i dont know, but i have a memory like a elephant when it comes to cowboys stuff, my problem is sometimes i dont save it, and when asked, i cant find it,

I never realized or thought of the fact that a lot of the Cowboys probably were literally soft, rather than just mentally. :laugh2:

I wonder why he didn't want to play for the Cowboys at all?

The skins lost to Tampa Bay 14-13 in the divisional round in 1999. I guess he's knees were not the only thing hurting.

I remember the Thanksgiving game in 1997. The Cowboys were down 24-7 at the half. They cut the lead to 24-14 to start the 2nd half and had momentum going but then Oilers went on a 13+ minute drive and only scored a FG to take the air out of the Cowboys.

Barry Switzer's last season.

Joe..

I love talking football with ex-players. Especially those who weren't superstars. They're always willing to chat and most are down to Earth.

thanks zoners

thought youd like the story

best i remember why he didnt like the cowboys, grew up in houston, etc, i think he did but dont quote me on that, and said, didnt like the cowboys and told them at combine etc dont draft me, i wont play for u, etc...

i thought the part about training camp, not enough in pads coming from a player was very tellling on why the switch wasnt turned on and how wade tore this team down physically, as well as mentally

anthony said, sure no player likes training camp, but its a must to keep your muscle dexterioty or however u spell that, up, because if you dont u lose your muscle mass etc and detoriates

some zoner posted about that, keep working out or after so long, your muscle mass losses etc....

just thought some of you would like to hear that, what was going on in training camp if the just 3 pads all of 5 weeks was true by media writers
