In this other forum I posted the ESPN all time power rankings. This one guy put the cowboys fifth. Behind the steelers, niners, raiders, and broncos. I don't have a problem with the steelers and niners ahead of the cowboys. But I do have a serious problem with him putting the boys behind the broncos and raiders. He says that the boys dominated the 70's when the nfc was the weak conference and the cowboys played in a weak division. Also, whenever the skins, giants, and eagles were good thats when the boys started going down hill. The raiders, steelers, and broncos were good when the AFC was contending. That the niners were winning when the NFC was dominant. Basically the only times the cowboys dominated was when the division and the conference was weak. Can anyone help me with some stats, facts, anything to counter this dude. He brought up some points but there has to be some counters. So if anyone can help me I would appreciate it. Thanx.

P.S. He is a raider fan not one of our rivals.

tell him we dominated in the 90's also. Then say Raiders suck Broncos suck and everyone else but the cowboys suck then call him a homer and then post Records All time wins Play off records how we barely have a losing record against any teams in the NFL and how we are the best franchise ever.

But I want to be objective. He brought up some intresting stats from those days. For example, in the 70's the cowboys had a losing record against teams from the afc. Barely a winning record against teams with winning records and completely tore up the crappy teams. I want to have an honest debate about this.

then IDK i wasn't born in the 70's if HoS wasn't sleep maybe he can help you just ask him the cowboys all-time record against each of these teams that has been named ahead of him ask who has more super bowls and who has more playoff wins.

The Cowboys won 3 Super Bowls during a 13 year stretch of NFC Super Bowl victories, from 1985 to 1997. The Giants won 2 during that stretch, as did the Commanders.

The NFC East accounted for 7 of those 13 victories.

The Niners accounted for 4 of those Super Bowls.

The Bears and Packers each won one.

Seems to me like the NFC, and particularly the NFC East, were pretty dominant during that time.

The NFC won 13 consecutive Super Bowls from 1985 to 1997. We won three of those. The Commanders and Giants won two apiece. Within one 10-year span, the NFC East won seven Super Bowls. That's hardly dominating "when the division and the conference was weak."

And in the 1970s, the AFC dominated -- except for the two years when WE won the Super Bowl. If the NFC and our division were so weak then, how did we beat up on those big, strong AFC teams by a combined 51-13 in two Super Bowls? Never mind that our three Super Bowl losses in the 1970s came by three points, four points and four points.

The Cowboys were playing for a championship in their 6th year of existence in the league.

Being a fan of the Raiders who play right across the bay from the Niners he should know that 49ers were only dominant through one 14 year period of their whole existence. And they played in the weakest division in the NFC during that period. They racked up easy gimmie wins within their division that allowed them to command home field advantage in the playoffs.

The Cowboys hold the record for consecutive winning seasons at 20 in a row. No other team can match that.

The Cowboys have played in more Super Bowls than any other team.
There's a lot more, but I have to get ready for bed.

Speaking of the 1970s, Dallas beat the Dolphins (one of the dominant AFC teams of the decade) in the Super Bowl.

Dallas also beat the Broncos, whose appearance in the Super Bowl was no fluke, having beaten two of the other dominant AFC teams, Raiders and Steelers, in the AFC playoffs.

Dallas lost three other Super Bowls in that decade, one to the Colts, a team fresh out of the pre-merger NFL. The other two were to the Steelers each by 4 points and each were good games. So Dallas ranks no worse than third in the 1970s and probably second given the head-to-head win over the Dolphins.

In the 1980s, Dallas had the best regular season winning record in the NFC from 1980 through 1985, better than the 49ers and Commanders. Dallas had three straight NFC championship game appearances during this span. Two of the three teams to beat Dallas in those games went on the win the Super Bowl.

In the 1990s, Dallas won three Super Bowls and Troy Aikman set a record for the most wins by a QB during a decade. Dallas missed the playoffs only twice in the 1990s and was the team of the decade.

Not much to brag about in the 2000s, yet. A few playoff years so far. However the 2000s have been lean years for some of the other Super Bowl era great teams such as the 49ers.

Overall, Dallas ranks at #1 in the Super Bowl era IMO, but at least in the top three in anyone's rankings.

You're wasting your time. ANYbody that has the Raiders in the top five needs to get off the meds and move up to voltage.

Behind the Steelers, 9ers, raiders and broncos?

I would ignore that person.

Well... regular season games against the AFC dont mean jack - so I got nothing.

We were 2-3 in SB. So we lost to AFC teams when it counted.

Those 3 losses were backbreakers but we were in each SB to win. Just didnt fall in our favor. Colts fumble, Jackie Smith, Swann BS catch.... etc.

Just tell him that the Cowboys are:
  • America's Team
  • Mexico's Team
  • Europe's Team
  • Heck.... The World's Team lol
