On another forum, someone is saying that Mike Ditka was the Cowboys Def. Coordinator before he went to the Bears.

I don't think he was ever a coordinator. Especially not on defense. I know Ernie Stauntner was forever.

Anyway, I've been searching the net but can't seem to find a list of Cowboys coordinators thru the years.

Please help.

Thanks.

Retiring after the 1972 season, Ditka was immediately hired as an assistant coach by Cowboys' head coach Tom Landry. Ditka spent nine seasons as an assistant coach with the Cowboys. During his tenure, the Cowboys made the playoffs eight times, won six division titles and three NFC Championships, including the one preceding their Super Bowl victory in 1977

I thought he was a tight ends coach/special teams coach.

I think you are right about Stautner. I think he was the only DC Landry had except maybe the first year of the franchise.

The only OCs I know off the top of my head were Dan Reeves and Paul Hackett. Obviously, there are more, but I don't know them.

There were no DCs or OCs then. You had position coaches and Assistant Coaches but Defensive and Offensive Co-ordinators did not exist for the Cowboys back then, as I recall.

Actually they did, but it was in name only. Landry was always both offensive and defensive coordinator. The man had a computer for a brain.

Thanks all for the help. I knew I was right. :p:

Stautner coached the defensive line for the Cowboys from 1966-72 and also served as the defensive coordinator from 1973-88.

I can find nowhere that a coach is designated as OC or DC.

You are right. He coached special teams for sure and I think I recall TE coach as well. He was not a defensive coach.

Yes, Stautner was the DC from 1973-88 and Ditka was an assistant from 1973-1981 and then took over the bears in 1982, so no he was never the DC.

we had them both...none of our coordinators called offensive plays however, Landry did all that

Reeves was OC here for quite some time...Paul Hackett had the role at the end of Landry's time here...I think John Mackovic may have also served as OC if I remember correnctly

I don't think this is right. The Assistant HC would have probably been Gene Stallings in 1973. If there was indeed a DC, I think it would have been Stallings. Ron Myers was also a coach on that team, along with Ditka, Stautner, Emal Allen and Jerry Tubbs. There were other's but those are notable. Buck Buchanon was also on that team as an Equipment Mngr.

That was much later David. In 1973, I can find no record, what so ever, of any OC or DC. In fact, I don't think those came into existance until much later. You had Assistant Head Coaches but not coordinators so far as I can tell.

No, Stallings was never the DC. He was the Assistant HC and also the DB coach. Stautner was pretty much the top defensive coach whether he had the official title of DC or not.

All I can tell you is Erine was the DC of the Cowboys and was called the DC even back then.

Right, I believe Landry called both sides until later on. Staunter may have had the title in the later years. But I think Landry still had the final call.

Well fellas, I remember Ernie being the Defensive Line coach. I don't remember him being the DC. If you say he was, then OK. I won't argue it.

Dick Nolan (Mike's dad) was also on Landry's staff for quite some time...I cant remember if he held the DC title for awhile too
