I need some help from the STAT gurus (pass deflections)

Does anybody know how many pass deflections our dline, specifically, has had the last few seasons and how that compares to the rest of the NFL? I would think we are around the bottom and I wouldn't be surprised if one player (JJ Watt) had more last season than our entire dline combined.

One thing I really didn't like about Coach Baker is that he never seemed to emphasis this to the dline. If we have such a hard time rushing the qb why not try batting down more passes? Couldn't this lead to more potential interceptions? With tall guys like Ware and Hatcher, I feel like this one of the biggest things that's been missing from our repertoire the last few years.

For several years I've been wanting this from our defense, anybody else agree?

Good question. I think Hatcher had a few if I recall, and Spencer definitely had some FFs but I don't recall very many DL swats.

PFF credits Watt with 15 batted passes last year, which is four more than our DL's total for 2011 and 2012.

2012
Hatcher 1
Spears 1

2011
Ratliff 3
Coleman 3
Spears 2
Hatcher 1

With Ratliff and Coleman missing significant snaps last year, we ranked last among all 3-4 lines in 2012, after ranking 4th the year before.

2012 (2011)
Texans 25 (11)
Cards 13 (15)
Chargers 10 (3)
Skins 9 (8)
Colts 7 (--)
Chiefs 7 (8)
Ravens 6 (12)
Steelers 6 (7)
Jets 5 (6)
Packers 5 (4)
49ers 3 (7)
Cowboys 2 (9)

All that said, among 3-4 defenses, the Packers and 49ers (the teams with the fewest batted passes) are the teams with the most INT over the last two seasons. But there's no doubt that more batted passes is a good thing for a defense.

Wow thank you @percyhoward . This is an underrated department where we need to improve. Only two all season is unacceptable.

I could tell you but you'll just use it to start another thread called- JJ Watt Batted Down More Ball Than Our Whole Team- Then I suspect you'll just go on another 5-6 paragraphs talking about how handsome JJ Watt is. JK I don't know, but it would be nice to see any kind of disruption. With the switch to the 4-3 the odds increase by 25% that that will happen. <---------Hows that for a stat?

Upon further review. Found a pretty good article here from FO, http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2013/watt-happens-look-tipped-passes
I'd C+P it but it has a chart. If Watt can keep it up for another year all teams will start focusing on it more. One of the best indicators of how much success a DE will have is length of arms and not just for that.

The Eagles DL is wearing netting screens type of things on their backs during practice to help their QB's with this. Vick happens to be exceptionally bad at getting the ball past the line. I don't know how many he had in 012 but in 011 he had 19 knocked down which doesn't sound like allot but I'd like to see how many offem where on 3rd down. Who knows Watt might make this an official stat.

hmm what was your old name on here? PM me if you don't want to announce it. Someone who signed up in July should not be aware of my Watt obsession.

I think I read out players are picking up their hands up even our linebackers, too bat balls down, I really hope it's true cause we need some of those, Qbs in the NFC ain't too tall, and that can give our D kind of a break everyonce on a while, a waisted down for the offense in my opinion!

I'm new here. Alotta Cowboy fans have that obsession and sometimes they complain about the Smith pick, thought you might be one of those. I was just yankin your chain.
