I can't believe the Commanders fan is the only one making sense in this thread. I'll post here what I must have posted a thousand times in the chat room.
Landry can turn out to be an all-pro DB and it wouldn't matter. Hell, every single member of the Commanders secondary can turn out to be all-pro and it still will not matter. In this league, if you can not stop the run or rush the passer, YOU WILL LOSE!!! It's that simple. And right now, the Commanders are not capable of doing either of those two things. They couldn't do it last year and have not done nearly enough this offseason to address the problem.
I know some of y'all had a real love affair with Landry and I do think he can end up being a damn good player in the NFL. It doesn't change the fact that the Commanders NEEDED to draft a Defensive Lineman with the #6 pick and they drafted a freaking Safety. A huge misstep by Washington in the first round.
since you are obviously not a fan of our team, ill help you out. In GW's system, you dont need top talent on the defensive line, it is more important to have good lb's. Example, just look at our past defenses under GW that were top 10, and tell me who was on those lines. NO ONE. The main part for our lineman is to know their assignment, and fill their lane.
Now look at last year. Our problem was with our MLB and WLB. First of all, ill start with marshall in the middle. The guy doesn't know how to shed blockers, and was constantly getting pushed around in the middle, allowing the constant 6 yard runs that kept runs going. Now, look at holdman at the weakside. The guy is just flat out bad. Do you really think it is a coincidence that in the 2 years he has been named a starter, our run defense has dropped drastically?
I think bigger upgrades then the Dline were the ones we now have at linebacker. Fletcher in the middle (regardless of age) is a huge upgrade. He is a solid player, who hasnt missed a game in his entire career. He knows how to read defenses and get to the ball (hence why he has over 150 tackles for 3 straight years)
Then at weakside, we have either McIntosh or Marshal, either of which will be a big upgrade.
So while an upgrade on the dline would have obviously helped, I think a bigger upgrade for us is at the LB position, because GW relies on them
