He really didn't.
No one has said Switzer couldn’t coach. But he wasn’t brought in to coach at Dallas. He was a figure head. Jerry’s first puppet.Sad that many have opinions without actually reading facts.
Barry Switzer was successful everywhere. Broyles hired him to coach at Arkansas, and he was a coach on their National title team that Jerry and Jimmy played on. Broyles called him one of the key coaching hires.
When he went to Oklahoma, he perfected the wishbone there as the offensive coordinator. Oklahoma was 3-7 in 1965. Switzer was hired as OC in 1966, took over as head coach ‘73-‘88. Not a single losing season after taking over the offense in 1966. He was the architect of the most prolific rushing offense in NCAA history. As head coach, 157-29-4. In the NFL, 40-24 with a 5-2 playoff record.
To say Barry Switzer couldn’t coach is just ridiculous.
The team fell apart in 94 without Jimmys leadership and discipline. He helped lead us to a Super Bowl win that cemented the Cowboys as the team of the 90s. The players were unhappy that Jimmy was gone and Switzer was able to keep the team together. Our Super Bowl run appeared to be over after the 94 championship game loss to San Francisco but we were able to rebound the next season. The team fell apart because of free agency. We started losing key players every year as teams began raiding our roster. It’s not like any of the other head coaches Jerry hired had any success after Switzer. Don’t understand why Switzer receives so much grief from Cowboys fans, the team could have easily quit on him when he was hired but the Cowboys ended up winning another Super Bowl.
F all that noise..tired of that narrative , players with bigger names then that like Clowney, Mack, Cooper, bell, Brown, etc etc etc are traded or cut because of many business decsions..they are hard to replace and no guarantee but theres a cap and Gms and owners allegedly better then Jerry make decsions like this all the time..what happen to the Legion of boom? thats one example and many others etcTrue.
Jerry tore that super bowl team apart by letting key players walk so he could sign huge stars, Deion being one example. Guys that Jerry let walk: Stepnoski, Casillas, Jimmie Jones, Jeffcoat, James Washington, Harper, Gogan, Ken Norton, Gesek, and Cornish. Jerry did little to replace them. At this point, he was already showing his vast lack of football knowledge.
I didn’t like him much either but this is a bit harsh.“respect him as a HC”?
guy was garbage and was here collecting a paycheck
I detest the moron

He was a horrible coach. But I wouldn’t call him a moron or an idiot.Perhaps, I just can’t stand Cowboy fans defending this idiot who brought in a culture of lack of accountability and discipline and cost us a 4 peat
No, he didn't, and deserves zero credit.Yes he did and he deserves some credit for it.
Your last statement is the weakest statement made on these boards. It generally means that you lost the argument and got nothing. Congrats for admitting it.F all that noise..tired of that narrative , players with bigger names then that like Clowney, Mack, Cooper, bell, Brown, etc etc etc are traded or cut because of many business decsions..they are hard to replace and no guarantee but theres a cap and Gms and owners allegedly better then Jerry make decsions like this all the time..what happen to the Legion of boom? thats one example and many others etc
big time NFL stars are moved, cut, traded etc etc by all teams all the time..this wasnt jerry purposely blowing things up it happens..Jerry knows more then people give him credit for he played HS/college football and then has had years of working with Jimmy and Billp and others..just fans around here FEEL they know jerrys football knowledge..

Who’s Booger?I don't know what Johnson's problem with Booger was but he had one. Not only did he not show him any respect but he actually tried to come between Booger and the players. Campo told Switzer that he should get Booger back in the meetings and involved with the team and that's what he did, that's what he was hired to do. At that time, I don't think Booger's ego was the problem. Campo was to soon learn the danger of his advice.
What is wrong is to blame Switzer for that game in SF because no one knows if that happens with Johnson and you can forget that "he'd have them ready" because he was the HC at the previous SB and they needed a kick in the pants from James Washington because they were flat as hell. He was the SB MVP and it wasn't close.
No question about which coach was a better NFL coach, had Booger hired Switzer and that turnaround doesn't happen and he possibly goes the way of Bright and he's belly up. Jimmy got the big head and decided Booger was lucky he came to work for him instead of the other way around. I don't know if Jimmy took a real hard look at the lay of the land but there weren't many owners letting college coaches build their teams. It was the perfect marriage with an expiration date on it from the beginning.
