going with an undrafted NATE NEWTON, an undrafted Mark Tunei, a 3rd round pick named erik williams at RT, an end of the 3rd round pick mark stepnoski, in 1991...so if this looks like deja vu it could be .....costa reminds me of a young mark stepnoski....tyron smith...erik williams...maybe even better! the others we will see..but they must see something in them...bottom line, is we have been down this road before!

and gesek was a 10th rounder!

But those players weren't drafted by Jerry Jones, so therefore this team will fail because Jerry is an idiot.

Stepnoski and Williams were.

lol.

Oh brother.

You know what's going to be hilarious? If these young guys work out, and I really believe they will, how quickly the Jerry haters will turn this from a "Dumb decision by Jerry" to a "Smart move by Jason Garrett".

That will be hilarious.

He's earned the reputation since he started picking players in 1994.

here is the deal...i am worried about center but will it work out? we will see..if they say gurode cant get to the 2nd level anymore then i am less worried..looks like something is going on on the o line as far as getting them to play...

now what about the D line? we need to be able to stop teams from running down our throats...right now we cant

For once I haven't seen many post of people dumping on Jerry for this move. I see a lot of people questioning the move and others praising Garrett but not a lot of Jerry bashers at the moment.

The difference thes guys weren't untested kids at the same time. Erik Williams was the youngest of these guys. Here is the O-line when Erik Williams became a fulltime starter in 1992:

TUINEI: Had been with the team since 1983, and a starter since 1986 - hardly a raw player by the time.

NEWTON: a USFL veteran when he came to the Cowboys in 1986, and became a fulltime starter with Dallas in 1987.

GESEK: Drafted by the Raiders in 1987, became a fulltime starter in 1989. Came to Dallas in 1990.

STEPNOSKI: Drafted in 1989, became a fulltime starter in 1990.

WILLIAMS: When Williams became a full time starter in 1992, he was Surrounded by a 9 year veteran (Tuinei), a 6 year veteran (Newton), a 5 year veteran (Gesek) and a 3 year veteran (Stepnoski).

On top of that we had a veteran starter in Kevin Gogan in the mix as well.

And Gesek was acquired by Jerry.

Good points man. If its time its time. Im not sold on leaving Romo behind that line but like you said they must see something in these guys! IT's time!!

If you read my post above, it's really not a good point because it's not remotely the same thing. Those guys he mentioned came into the NFL and became starters at various times from 1983 to 1992, not at the same time like now.

Yep, but I was only talking about the draft picks in the OP.

I know, but I thought the point you were debunking was essentially that the previous regime built the O-line back then, and I was adding another example of that not being true.

I fully expect Romo to have to move around like the older days, but there is never really a good time to break in new O linemen. I'm hoping that Kosier and...Free?? can glue it together a little bit. I guess there's not a whole lot to do, 'cept wait and see. That's what makes football fun.

I wouldn't list the USFL as something that 'we knew he could play because he played there.' For every Reggie White, there were probably 5 guys that simply could not make the NFL. I mean..that's what the USFL was sorta built on...players that the NFL didn't want.

Tuinea was originally a D-Linemen.

And I remember that 1989 O-Line quite well. About as bad as it got.

To me, it all changed once we got Emmitt and then when Norv was calling the plays.

Sure the USFL isn't a great reference, but Newton was already a starter with the Cowboys for 5 years before Williams became a starter.

And yes, Tuinei was originally a D-lineman, but he was a starting O-lineman for 6 years before Williams became a starter.

So the point remains that the comparison of what is happening now is in no way similar to the situation with Tuinei, Newton, Stepnoski and Williams.

Today we have only one longtime starting O-lineman on the roster. The only other veterans with experience are a guy going into his 2nd year as a starter, and a guy who has been a backup for 3 full years. Every other O-lineman on the roster has either never played a down in a regular season NFL game, or has only played a handful of downs.
